I know this is for cars, but what about it sitting in the hot sun or freezing cold inside the car? Does it need special protection?

Fire extinguishers are designed to fight fires, which are hot. What good would it do for an extinguisher to blow up when the temperature reaches nonlethal levels? You can bet that it gets a lot hotter inside a burning house than it does inside your car or truck on a sunny day.

Look for one that displays the Underwriters Laboratory label (UL rated). The laboratory requires that extinguishers can be safely stored at minus-40 to plus-120 degrees, a standard that is sometimes posted on the extinguisher.

But the laboratory also requires that extinguishers survive 175 degrees for seven days, which is not normally disclosed in product information. A quality, UL-listed extinguisher has a steel cylinder that is designed to withstand six times its normal pressure without bursting.

How does the mounting system work? What do you mount it to in your car? Do you have to drill holes or modify the car in some way?

To mount securely you would have to drill holes. This one is actually fairly small so you might be able to secure with those double sided tape pieces with the tabs on that can be removed damage free.

Does it have a pressure gauge?

Model AUTO5 does not have a pressure gauge. It has a pressure indicating stem (green in color) on the top of the head. If the stem is down (hidden) that indicates the pressure is low, possibly inoperable. If you look at pics 1 and 3, they show both sides of the head...ring-pin on one side, nothing on the other. how many pounds of chemicals inside?

The label states “2.43 lbs. + 2 oz.” of a bicarbonate. I don’t know why They express it in that fashion. Overall unit when filled is is 4 lbs.
