fascinating
The stories here weave together so many interesting tales and give important details to people who read the Outlander series. They are also great as stand alone stories, with an eye to history.

If you are not up to tackling a huge volume ...
... of the "Outlander" world at the moment, but just want to pay a few small visits, then the Lord John Grey novellas might just be the "ticket" for you into the 18th century. What's more, a few questions you might have had about some of the characters (e.g., Roger's parents) get answered.

A Delightful Dip
Loved it! Like getting an I sidera peek into the complex and immersive world of the Outlander series. There are many smaller characters and gaps of time. It is time travel after all. So what a treat to get some of these missing bits and pieces in this collection. The most common complaint I've ever heard about this series is that the books are “tomes”. I challenge you to read this delightful collection of stories that were not in the original books, and not wonder why not? And you’ll remember these stories and that there's such more that isn't in the book the next time you want to complain that they are “tomes”. The magic of Diana’s writing is in all these little details that she meticulously weaves together in her Outlander universe. What a nice little dip into that world.

An important "tween" book for Gabaldon's 'Outlander' series
At first, I was a bit skeptical this book would significantly enhance the Gabaldon 'Outlander' series. However, I admit I was wrong. If for no other reason than the chronology included in the book's preface, which does an outstanding job of matriculating all the pieces of the puzzle that make up this odyssey. Additionally, this collection of well-written, short stories is quite enjoyable, as well as illuminating!

Companion to the "Outlander" series of books by Diana Gabaldon
This has several short stories or novellas that give back story to specific characters from the Outlander series. It fills in gaps, answers some questions I had in my mind. I highly recommend this book if you will and/or have read the Outlander series.

Mixed review
Several outtakes and side stories from the Outlander universe fill in the blanks of the main story told through the existing 8 books of the main series as well as serving to round out the story of several secondary characters.I’d already purchased and read several of the novellas and short stories included in this anthology but of the ones that were new to me, I enjoyed “A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows” the most which tells the heartbreaking story of what really happened to Roger’s parents. Less enjoyed, “Besieged” focuses on Lord John’s attempts to save some family members that leads to his unwanted entanglement in a siege of Havana after leaving his post in Jamaica. While I love LJ’s character and liked meeting his mother and other family members, this story moved a bit too slowly for my taste. Finally, “The Space Between” tells of a magical interaction between the Compte St. Germaine and Master Raymond, characters you’ll only be familiar with if you’ve read the main series. Of the three, this story is the most fantasy based and provides some opening for one or more of these characters as well as a couple of others, to return to the main story line.Bottom line: Diana Gabaldon just can’t write anything “bad” but that’s not to say that some stories aren’t more enjoyable than others. Custom of the Army and Virgins are arguably the best entries in this anthology but like the ones mentioned above, are more enjoyable if you’ve read the main series.

A good taster of the Outlander stories
Enjoyed the insights into more of John Greys life. Added background to many of the Outlander characters, I wish more writers did this, I get so interested in the characters I like to know more of who they were or what happens to them once they leave the main stage as it were. Diane Gabaldon is an excellent writer, she draws you in and you never want the story to end! I for one can't get enough!!!

Captivating!
There is more to SSTSF than Time travel but it is so captivating. Most characters, including your faves star in these short back stories. ( some more detailed)If you like this, Trail of Fire is even more revelatory!A must read for Outlander enthusiasts-paints a bigger, much bigger picture. If you are not familiar with Lord John side stories this may not be a good place to start .
