The art you expect, the writing you don't. And what a combination it is...
At age 60, Amano has taken a while to write his own visual novel. He's been illustrating the work of others for ages, but it's quite refreshing to see what he does without the constraints of someone else's vision.Deva Zan is a tale of Zan, a general in the Edo period who was formally one of twelve gods. They acted under the guidance of Lady Mairu until Moma, the god of chaos, took control of their home, Mt. Sumeru. Banished from their godly place, the twelve gods scatter and live mortal lives, until the time is right to reclaim their status.Deva Zan's main attraction lies in the mountain of new paintings by Amano. While some works are unusually abstact for his style, fans will still see plenty of his signature slim eyes and gorgeous colors. Amano even pays homage to his older works such as Speed Racer in small cameos. This slightly distracts from the story when readers think "Hmm, haven I seen that before?". However, there's more than enough artwork that this point is negligible. On the publishing side, Dark Horse has done a good job on the actual book. It's a larger hardcover with wonderful color reproductions. It would be hard to improve on the quality without having the actual art in front of you. Dark Horse has even kept the imperfect edges of the paper and canvases in the majority of cases.Mr. Amano's first novel of his own no doubt benefited from his decades of experience, because it's one incredible ride both visually and literary. The story is a mixture of Asian-inspired journey through both modern eras and ethereal battlefields. Amano's artwork seamlessly transitions from paintings reminiscent of the ukiyo-e style to modern pop. He switches styles at just the right time and does it in expert fashion. For his fans, Deva Zan is a mandatory purchase. For the uninitiated, the book is a great introduction to Amano's work.

Absorbing
Mesmerizing quantum Buddhist dreampunk. Movement in Amano's art is always fascinating to watch and swirling lines inherently suited to storytelling. The story itself is a wild ride as well. I stayed up all night reading.
