Sutra’s simplified!
I’m in a Yoga Teacher Training and a lot is self-study. To gain better knowledge, I decided to read this book on my own and I’m so glad I did! The text is so simple to comprehend and really is a great addition to training or learning about the Sutras of Patanjali.

Ancient wisdom, but obscure explanations
I read this version of the yoga sutra as part of my teacher training course in 2011.The book is laid out nicely with a simple introduction and a page dedicated to each verse of the sutra. Each page has a translation of the Sanskrit, the original Sanskrit in roman letters, and a brief discussion/explanation of the verse. The information on the pages is easily accessible to the reader. For the most part, I enjoyed reading this presentation of the yoga sutra.Personally, I am dissatisfied with many of the explanations of the sutra. The author(s) sometimes provide obscure, far-out examples that are unrealistic and hard to relate to. For example, they speak a lot about the creation and perpetration of karmic seeds, however the reflections on how these seeds relate to our lives barely scratch the surface.Overall this book is a nicely presented compilation of the yoga sutra. The presentation and explanation seem friendly to someone who is just getting into the Indian spiritual classics. However, if you are looking for an in-depth critical analysis of the sutra, with applicable, real world examples, then you may want to consider another book.

Interesting book
This book is difficult to read and understand even though it was written by two English speaking experts.I think that one has to have a pretty good understanding of the history and philosophy of yoga.It is on my list to return to as I gain more understanding of yogic philosophy.

Geshe Michael and Lama Christie on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras
I already have the Bouanchaud, Desikachar and Swami Satchidananda versions and this is another refreshing interpretation and commentary on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. I can't get enough of this book and reread from all of the versions I have on a regular basis. As always Geshe Michael and Lama Christie have a completely different way of translating, elucidating and bringing these ancient wisdoms to life. This is a Tibetan Buddhist interpretation of the ancient Yogic text with a distinctly western use of language and imagery. What is quite different is that the commentaries are universally quite short but deeply thought provoking, much like the actual sutras (short aphorisms - translated as threads) themselves. Also, rather than translate and comment on each sutra in turn, they are often grouped together so there is a kind of flow between them which is often lost when the sutras are commented on one by one. When reading any commentary on the Yoga Sutras it is like being in the presence of a guru learning and gaining understanding in a particular way and when you read different versions it brings new life and new meaning. We are so lucky to live at a time when when this is possible.

A classical commentary of the Yoga Sutra. Geshe Michael ...
A classical commentary of the Yoga Sutra. Geshe Michael Roach is an authentic teacher who knows how to deliver ancient yogic knowledge in our everyday language. Regardless of how many other Yoga Sutra commentaries you have read, this is the one not to be missed.
