Minimum protection but OK for now
It's a surge protector so it has limitations. The size of the surge will determine how well it performs. Also, if you have brown-outs it will not keep your devices powered up. $5+ for the product and $7+ for shipping seems to me to be the old trick of burying the price in the shipping cost. I had hoped that such ploys had disappeared. Up to you, the buyer, if you want to participate. I did because Amazon is my go-to retailer. Later, after visiting Lowes/Home Depot I can see that you can buy similar devices immediately with no shipping costs.540 Joules (Unit of energy) is equivalent to 1Watt of power dissipated for 1 second. I believe transients (spikes) on a power line typically occur in milliseconds but can be pretty big, especially in an electrical storm. When transients happen, cheaper surge protectors like this one typically use passive circuits (e.g., capacitors, resistors) to filter out or dampen the amplitude of the spike to protect your equipment. If the amount of energy is much greater than this 540 Joule unit (e.g., a close hit by lightning) then the filter circuit could quite possibly burn out but it might save your equipment for most common events (small transients). For the most part, the blips that appear on AC transmission lines will probably get filtered so you will be OK. Just remember, don't expect perfection for $5. If you are concerned about brown-outs or steady power levels get some form of protection that includes a battery and an inverter. This will keep your electronics going for 10-15 mins (If sized correctly) while you power down gracefully. There are reasonably priced battery back-up units available and I would recommend them for sensitive electronics, particularly computers. (Battery back-up protection can cost anywhere from $50 to $500 or even more).I have a sensitive electronic component on my water softener so I'm trying this product out. The circuit only uses a small amount of power. My computers on the other hand are on APC battery backup units which give me about 10-15 mins in a power outage situation. Plenty of time to turn off my systems gracefully so that they come back up without a hitch later. If your computer gets hit with an outage suddenly it can be quite a challenge to get it back up again, especially if the electronics get hit with a power surge that causes component failure. Don't use this device to protect your computer.

Works!
Not much to say here. It works. It's nothing fancy, but it works. Silly light on it is not necessary.
