Totally fine
Bought the light version of this set about 5 months ago. Totally solid grinders--no issues to speak of. Haven't had issues with grind settings or build quality. Works as expected. I can see all the negative reviews on the dark set--I guess those are coated/painted. Probably best to avoid that. Lots of people are ree-tar-ded though so that could be an issue as well.

Good buy
Handsome and sturdy. They grind well; however at different speeds. The salt grinds fast and pepper slower than we are used to. Overall happy with them.

Beautiful Wood Marred By Plastic Adjusting Knob.
I love freshly ground salt and pepper, and those little jars that you can buy at the supermarket are really crappy. So I really welcomed the opportunity to check these two grinders out. They are really, really nice. The finish on them is excellent and smooth and they are beautiful additions to any table. In fact, I broke them out for their first use on Thanksgiving and everybody thought they were lovely.Filling them is easy. Just pull the adjusting knob out of the top and dump your salt or pepper in. Once put back on, the adjusting knob gives you the option to set five different grinds from fine to coarse. Each grinder is marked with a small s or p to indicate what's in them, though I should mention they are rather small letters and the contrast against the color of the grinder is not great, so it does require a good glance. The only thing keeping these from being five star grinders, is the fact that the adjusting knob on the top is plastic. Beige plastic. Whomever the beancounter at Oxo was that made that decision was, frankly, an idiot. Why on Earth would you make beautiful smooth wood grinders with a cheap plastic knob to adjust the grind prominently featured?Honestly, I'd drop this to a 3-star review were it not for the outstanding quality of the rest of the grinder. But really, Oxo, plastic?

They grind
These not only look good in our kitchen but function well. I was a little surprised they don't hold more for their size but overall they are very good.

Probably the best, most robust salt grinder we've had...
This product works as described. It is a very robust, solid design and works great with medium to very coarse salt. We love it.

Pepper and Salt mills are NOT the same
Hear ye, hear ye: OXO has a salt mill, and a pepper mill. They look the same (except for that one has an “S” and one has a “P”) but they could not be more different. We had one of these, which we bought individually, naturally thinking it was a pepper mill and that the icon on top was a stylistic squiggle. NO. It was an “S” for salt. No wonder the pepper didn’t front very well. Then we got a “P” one, but in the dark color, to match our lighter “S” one. Bamb-ba-lamb-ba! P is for pepper, S is for salt. Don’t screw it up. The blades inside are for one or the other, and the difference is noticeable.

Salt comes out too fast, pepper comes out way too slow
Looks nice but not at all practical. For pepper, I have to grind 10x more than my previous grinder. For the salt - just a single rotation produces too much salt.

One of the best
I generally dislike salt grinders. I find they either are hard to adjust to the coarseness I like - won't get fine enough for use at the table, or they don't like the salt I feed them (it's too coarse and jams, or too fine and pours through too fast). This one seems to handle all these scenarios better than average. I gets a powder-like grind at the finest setting (nice for finish salting a plate or at the table), and will do coarse for the kitchen or steaks before cooking too. Good grip, as the name implies. Excellent.
