Probably diseased stock
I've grown garlic for many years successfully, but when these started shooting the leaves were distorted, stunted, and unhealthy-looking. The three cloves that did grow taller were also twisted. I've instructed my gardener (20 years full time here) to scrap them.

Very quick to germinate
These were planted in the first week of December, later than they should have been, and on 15th December the shoots are already coming through. Impressive so far but only time will tell how good they are.
