My students LOVE it
This book is one of the few that has had my middle school students begging to read more. It is definitely an intense story, but as a teacher I appreciate that there was nothing gratuitous in how the author had Joseph share his story. An extremely well written book that you won't forget.

My all time favorite
I bought this book in seventh grade, I’m now a freshman in high school, I have read this book five times and I don’t think I will ever find a book that I like better than this one. It never fails to bring me to tears, the story is incredible, READ THIS BOOK!

This is an excellent book; it's incredibly moving and captures how teenagers are forced to accept situations we would never expect an adult to tolerate. The narrator is the friend of Joseph, a father of a daughter at only fourteen, and who has his own serious problems stemming from terrible parents, an unthinking society and careless authorities. The foster family at the centre of this novel are wonderful which makes the cruelty from many other adults in the book more tolerable. The conclusion is both depressing and uplifting, which leads me to my only criticism - usually in these stories of familial despair, there is no neat conclusion, no tying up of loose ends, so this feels forced in what is otherwise a very genuine, realistic and moving narrative.

Stunning, heartbreaking, beautiful.
Stunning, heartbreaking, beautiful. I love the protagonists voice, the nuances of the way he speaks, the way he has certain phrases and the absolutely mesmerising theme running through the book. It's not often a story can bring me to tears, but this did. A must read

Read the full thing in a day!
If you’re looking for a shorter story that will fill up a long journey this is the perfect book for you. It’s a relatively short book that I managed to read in just one day. However, its short length certainly didn’t stop me becoming emotionally invested in the characters and story line. It’s an emotional story but one that’s worth reading.

I ordered the book for my 11 year old son, but I got to read it first. I can't remember when was the last time a book moved me so much that I needed a few days to put myself together. I can't say more , it wouldn't be fair for the next readers, but from time to time we need to feel for someone and cry.
