A quality book
I know the quality of paper, clarity of print and general appearance of a book shouldn't sway you, but they do in my case. The paper is smooth, white and quite rigid, and the print is clear, sharp-edged and black (it does however reflect electric light at some angles). The main story covers 41 pages - equivalent to about 28 full pages of print, with 6 pages of colour illustrations - the rest being gaps at the end of chapters. Then come a couple of pages of illustrated cultural information with colour photos, and finally 17 pages of exercises on the chapters to test your knowledge, complete with answers. The quality of the downloadable audio recording is excellent as regards clarity, and although the speed is perhaps faster than some would like, it is not unreasonably fast and is suitable at this level of learning. The story itself is intriguing enough to maintain interest and does also have a comment to make about traditional craftsmanship in Italy. There is also a love story element, but nothing major. My copy is a 2015 first edition. I mention this because a previous story by the same publisher I have from 2011 is a smaller book, with slightly smaller print, no colour and a generally less impressive appearance. I notice many of these stories are being published in new editions and would recommend getting those, although this new story is not labelled as a new edition.

Charming story, A2 level Italian
Il Ladro di Scarpe is a charming short story, perfect for readers at the A2 level for Italian language. It uses a vocabulary of 1500 words, and this is very useful for people starting to read Italian. Because the vocabulary is relatively small, it means that there are fewer words to look up in the dictionary for the first time - and this is perfect for language learning. You can be pleased with the small success of reading and understanding a story rather than being swamped with too much new information at once. Because it has audio files available, you can hear what the words sound like in Italian as well. This is very useful for people who may not be learning in an Italian immersion environment. I enjoyed this little story, and I would recommend it to others looking for A2 level reading in Italian.

... of our Conversational Italian sessions and I find it comfortably matches our state of progress
We are reading this book as part of our Conversational Italian sessions and I find it comfortably matches our state of progress. It's a good story which introduces new words and is especially good for reading aloud to practice conversation. This series progresses in difficulty so when we are finished with Il Ladro we will probably choose a book from the next level up.

Easy to read but still a good story.
Our Italian reading group have really enjoyed this book(currently meeting on Zoom). It’s set in Florence and is an amusing story.

Great for intermediate beginners
Great book for beginners in Italian. It was a decently interesting story, and is great for mild exposure to a few of the harder-to-grasp basic grammatical structures. It's great practice for beginner reading, and included translations for colloquial expressions and less-common words.
