The Metalogicon of John of Salisbury: A Twelfth-Century Defense of the Verbal and Logical Arts of the Trivium Paperback – 17 February 2015

First came across this 30 years ago. Still as thought provoking and intellectually stimulating.

「十二世紀ルネサンス」におけるパリ大学黎明期で活躍なさったソールズベリのジョン（John of Salisbury, 1110年代後半-1180）による『超論理学』（1159年。当時、カンタベリ大司教シアボールドに行政官吏として仕えていた彼は40代だったでしょうか）の英訳版（訳：ダニエル・Ｄ・マクギャリー）で、副題は「12世紀の言語ならびに論理学を弁護する著作」（2009年、ポール・ドライ・ブックス）。レヴュアーが本書を購読したきっかけは上掲、十二世紀パリ大学の活動がどのようなものであったかにつき大いに興味を抱いていた際、本書を読めば（パリ大学の活動については）「生き生きとした証言によって知ることができる」との件りをジャック・ヴェルジェ著『中世の大学』（大高順雄訳、みすず書房。レヴュアーレヴュー済）に見出した事でした。レヴュアーは本書一読後、上記「生き生きとした証言」がヴェルジェ氏にとってどの辺りを指すのかにつき、明瞭には出来ませんでしたが、一つ言い得るのはソールズベリのジョンが学びを語る際、その純粋な悦びというか"drive force（推進力）"みたいなものが私達読者にも伝わってくるという事で、この学びへの純粋無垢さを有した人物の集積が中世大学黎明期の活動を支えたものなのだろう、とレヴュアーは推測いたしました。なお中世パリ大学で学んだソールズベリのジョンは論理学のみならず、自由七科の中のひとつであります天文学（≒占星術）をも学んでおられるのであり、『魔術と実験科学の歴史』第二巻（＝レヴュアーレヴュー済み）著者リン・ソーンダイクによれば天文学についての記述は彼の『超論理学』と同じ1159年作品『ポリクラティクス』中に記述があるようです。

A magnificent book! Where is the audiobook?

McGarry's translation of John of Salisbury's The Metalogicon is probably the most underrated, aggregated authority on pedagogy. It is a true travesty that the Conficician hoards have won this millennia and churned out drones with no reasoning skills of their own. Thank goodness there has been a neo-classical revival of the Trivium in the US. It is my hope that more and more educators discover this book and become passionate about returning to the roots that gave us some of the greatest minds of all time.Reading this book is like jumping into a cool pond on a summer's day. It is refreshing and quenching.

I found all four interesting as I am writing a thesis on the topic - only sad that I can no longer purchase books from you as Live in Australia.
