Bob Mould / Last Dog & Pony

I'm going to write a short review here. You likely have already heard the albums and live tracks here already at this point. It's Bob freaking Mould after all. The coolest thing is this is a $10-11 CD combo, with 3 inside and a really great package and liner notes with them. You can't go wrong filling out your collection with this, vs the standard issue CD's by themselves.

Hubcap is prime Bob Mould. TLDAPS not so much.

Awesome! Great deal for 3 cds. Love the live cd which is classic Bob ripping through his solo catalog up through that time.

What can I say? I love Bob Mould (both the artist and the album), and the extra tracks are a great bonus. As for The Last Dog and Pony Show, well, it’s my least favourite of his albums, but the hubcap album is so good it makes up for it - and New #1 is a triumph, almost to the point of saving the album - unfortunately, the rest of the songs sound uninspired, which is very rare for such a great musician. So, five stars.

So after the Sugar reissues we get the following two Bob Mould CD's plus a live CD with some extras. This box set also contains an interview and expansive booklet. This was the end of Bob Mould's guitar solo projects (until recently) and was filled with a dark overtone.Bob Mould (aka Hubcap) came out after Sugar split. Its one of Bobs finest albums. Several tracks could have come from the Sugar albums (Deep Karma Canyon, Fort Knox, King Solomon and Next Time That You Leave being prime examples). The tracks are really strong and contain some great guitar pop numbers. Bob even has a blast with I Hate Alternative Rock (perhaps foreshadowing his fall out with the genre in the next album and the subsequent years)/ There are plenty of darker moments too. But this album is a five star album. There are some good B sides included here and two live versions.Following this is The Last Dog and Pony Show. This is a somewhat confusing album. It should work well. It contains a number of very good tracks in First Drag of The Day, Moving Trucks and others which work well. They continue the trend but its a dark offering. Bob was clearly not happy with his lot at this point - see the booklet. The accompanying extra of the interview is testament to this. However, this is a patchy offering. Many fans of Bob in this genre will probably dislike the dance track Megamanic. Its not a bad track but feels somehow out of place here. Bob was clearly looking at different types of music and testing the waters here. Its probably a 3.5 star album to be honest with it not quite working as well as previous efforts. This is compounded here by being included in a box set with one of his strongest offerings. It appears somewhat diminished in comparison.The final disk is a pretty good live show. It covers the solo period (including previous solo tracks and one Sugar track). Its not the best live artefact but does well.Overall the boxset is well worth while. Its not in the same league as the Sugar ones. This package is good but the material isn't quite as consistently strong. Bob disappeared to the Wrestling World after this. Thank goodness he has come back now though. If you only know Bob Mould for Husker Du or Sugar then this is worth investing in. If you have both albums then probably not - the extras aren't as strong as the other remastered box sets.
