Excellent
Gave this as a gift to a young person who was traveling to Bali solo. Said it was very helpful in giving recommendations on what to do and where to go.

Excited to read it
I don't know about Stinky over there but I'm really excited to read this book. We'll ignore for one that the authors are just trying to make a living writing, and there's no need to be negative about travel books vs. the big bad internet. They complement each other. Sometimes I like the dead-tree version to scribble in and tear pages out. Reading a book is a beautiful way to engage with the content, the author, and friends. Books can be shared like a gift or kept to yourself anywhere or any time of day. And pair them with some other gps-enabled research on the internet, books can be a useful tool. And you don't have to spend your whole trip on your phone.

Not what I expected from a guide book
It seems that one temple is interchangeable with another- very few cultural details about which sites are the most important historically and locally. The book would benefit from fewer references to surfing- constant mention of left breaks or right breaks. I assume most surfers would check in with local shops for information about local conditions. The most annoying feature though is the author goes on and on with lists of homestays and guest houses, so few hotels. Price quotes should be consistent. On a given page, some accommodation prices are given in dollars, other listing are in Euro and other listing in local. currency. A good editor would have required that the author choose one currency and use it consistently throughout not a mishmash of listing prices. Anyway, I returned it and looking at DK and other choices.

It Is Better Not To Travel With This Kind Of Book.
Since backpacking from the mid-80s, the world has changed. No matter where you go, even in the smallest villages in some of the most undeveloped countries, amazingly will usually have internet Wi-Fi access. I have travelled to Indonesia six times and have spend approximately nine or ten months in total in various parts of the archipelago. My last trip was three months in 2018 through Sumatra and Bali. There is Wi-Fi everywhere in Indonesia. The internet has Google maps, etc., and these maps have hotels on them, so you can see where there are clusters of them. You also have hotel listing sites like Agoda, so you can see pictures and get an idea of prices before you go to look. You will find in these areas that there will also be more hotels that won't be listed on the internet, or on these listing sites, because they are newer, cheaper, don't want to pay unfair fees, or bother with the internet, etc., and are better. Once a hotel makes it into a book, standards often go down, and prices go up, due to travel guide book zombies keeping them afloat. Hotel listing sights will have current information. I always wait until I get into a town and have a look around, so I don't book ahead, but this is personal preference, but I still get on the computer and have a look at all the great information available through these sites. In general, almost all information about any country, especially in Asia, will be outdated before a book even makes it to publishing. A country like Indonesia is super dynamic. Change happens very quickly. All kinds of current information including, history, customs, food, language, how-to info, transportation, recommendations and reviews are up on the web. Lonely Planet books, especially in Asia, are not only a waster of money because the information will often be out of date, but it keeps you from finding the good stuff. Once you get out on the road, talking with other travelers will also be another great way to get good current information. If you want to carry around a useless brick, be my guest, and their Kindle versions, in my experience are even worse. Years ago, I went to one of the places they recommended, and it looked like it had been taken over by a gang and turned into a drug den.In the days before the internet, these types of guidebooks were the only game in town for information. Now, because of the accelerated rate of change in countries, and the availability of internet information, they are actually a complete waste of time and money, and worse, they keep you from finding accurate current reviews and information.
