In 1960, following on from the success of their collaboration on Some Like it Hot, director Billy Wilder (Ace in the Hole, Sunset Boulevard) reteamed with actor Jack Lemmon (The Odd Couple, Glengarry Glen Ross) for what many consider the pinnacle of their respective careers: The Apartment.C.C. ''Bud'' Baxter (Lemmon) is a lowly Manhattan office drone with a lucrative sideline in renting out his apartment to adulterous company bosses and their mistresses. When Bud enters into a similar arrangement the firm's personnel director, J.D. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray, Double Indemnity), his career prospects begin to look up… and up. But when he discovers that Sheldrake's mistress is Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine, Irma la Douce), the girl of his dreams, he finds himself forced to choose between his career and the woman he loves…Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, The Apartment features a wealth of Hollywood's finest talent – on both sides of the camera – at the top of their game. Most Watched Movie of the Pandemic
The Apartment had always been on my list of classic movies to see, and during the pandemic, I finally did it. I should have known it was going to be a good film, as it's a Billy Wilder piece (Sunset Boulevard, Some Like It Hot, etc.). But I was totally blown away by just how good it was. Since March 2020, I've watched it at least six times, and I'll watch it again soon. Great story. Great writing. Great actors. Great cinematography. Great musical score. It's all there. See it!

Captivating Story and Acting
This 4K Blu-ray edition, seen on an HD flat panel TV, is beautifully clear and sharp. Although some might consider the story line and sequence of events depressing, I was pulled in and found both Jack Lemmon's and Shirley MacLaine's roles intense and touching. Jack Lemmon's humor shines through in every scene, and for me it was a delightful experience to watch, not having seen the movie for many decades. Billy Wilder and Jack Lemmon took on this project immediately following the success of Some Like It Hot. Fun fact: the cover insert for this disc as shown here on Amazon is artistic, but is also reversible for a more playful and retro cover for those of us into the period in which the movie was released.

The best romantic comedy?
The Arrow Academy blu-ray of The Apartment is one of my favorite purchases I've made while building my video library. Great picture quality and sound, spiffy packaging. The film is one of the best from era; Jack Lemmon and Shirley McClaine are a great duo. The romantic element is impressive, more realistic and human than most romantic comedies I have seen. Intricate plot and subtlety subversive themes that are still relevant as ever. Top recommendation.
