Excellent information
This book has an abundance of information, including planting diagrams, which make good jumping off points for personal projects. I also found the book recommendations in the back of the book helpful.

One complaint
I like this book, but I have one major complaint: it’s hard to match the rendering of the garden plants to the plant list. You have to use the planting plan with numbers, but unless you know what all these plants look like it’s nearly impossible to match the plant to the plant list. It would be much more helpful if the reference numbers were on rendering. Frustrating, but still a nice book.

A terrific, useful go-to guide!
This is one of the most complete and helpful garden planning books I have ever come across. Seeking ideas to improve my Zone 7 perennial garden, I bought it not knowing how perfectly it would direct me to new ideas of plant combinations. The book describes "planning through planting" straightforwardly (but with some humor) and completely. It was easy to follow, with excellent diagrams and photos of suggested plantings. The plant guides in the back were extremely helpful, clearly listing all selections used in the book.It was published years ago, but don't let that fact put you off. Replace plant suggestions with newer cultivars if you want to. This book is essential reading for gardeners of all levels of expertise, in my opinion.

The most dog-eared garden book in my library - 10+ years still in heavy use
This is an excellent guide to planning any sort of perennial bed. I love that there are solutions for problem areas and the chart in back for planning year round blooms and cross checking best conditions. In laying out my beds it gives me a good idea of the volume of plant material needed for it - surprising in some ways for me, but I got the outcome I'd hoped for. Highly recommend. Also a fan of "Fallscaping" by Nancy Ondra.

Best book of the ones I ordered
Ordered four new gardening books and this one beats the other three combined hands-down. SO much information!! Tons of charts and layouts for perennial beds for different seasons, looks, color schemes. Plus LOTS of beautiful images and LOADS of information. Will be spending next weekend reading this one! Definitely recommend if you want to learn how to create interesting and beautiful perennial beds.

Out of date
This book was probably very useful when it was written. Gardening and landscaping have come a long way since then. It would be useful to a beginning gardener but is way out of date for anyone trying to branch out from the diagram for “a sunny border,” “a wet border, etc.
