One of the most unfairly overlooked movies of the year
Steve McQueen and Gillian Flynn's "Widows" is adapted from a British TV series (unwatched by me) and makes for a powerful, resonant and surprisingly layered film. There are two action sequences which are the selling point of the flick (the first being the opening and the latter being the attempted heist), and both are fast-paced, engaging while also being occasionally heart-stopping. The first sequence introduces us to the titular "Widows" and their ill-fated husbands with four extremely different kisses. There's one that appears out of a fantasy, one that stems from abuse, one from ignorance and a lack of empathy and the final an absence of emotion. Juxtaposed with a botched job that quite literally ends with a bang, this is simply one of the best opening sequences I've watched in a film in a very long time. The actors are uniformly excellent, especially Viola Davis, Elizabeth Debecki, Colin Farrell, Liam Neeson and Michelle Rodriguez. Newcomer Cynthia Erivo has a less showy role than she did in "Bad Times at the El Royale," but her work here and in "Bad Times" make me incredibly excited to see what she does next. Brian Tyree Henry and Daniel Kaluuya are reliably brilliant as brothers/crime lords who want to move into a different form of armed robbery. Of course, everyone who graces the screen gives a memorable performance as there wasn't a single role I found to be underdeveloped, even roles that only required one or two scenes.Great writing, directing, acting and tech work happen often in film in any given year, but what made "Widows" so special to me was how double-edged the storytelling was once reflected upon. There's a lot of thoughtful discussion on gender, race, socio-economic status, marriage as a convenience (a Gillian Flynn specialty) and much more which doesn't even begin to acknowledge the parallels between nepotism in politics and armed robbery. Like I said, "Widows" is very much so a deeply layered work. While I have watched movies this layered often split audiences into love/hate groups (sorry, "mother!," but you're the best example), what works remarkably well here is that the story of wives having to repay their criminal husbands' debt (and only having their natural skills plus being underestimated to their advantage) keeps moving along without any obvious pandering as we explore this deeply divided ward of Chicago. The movie is surprisingly funny at times, emotionally resonant, extremely watchable and an overall great film experience. If you like your movies to have a deceptively straight-forward narrative only to reflect on its satire after the ends credits roll, this is your ticket. I sincerely can't recommend this movie enough as it was definitely one of my absolute favorites of its year.

Wonderful neo-noir movie
I really enjoyed the cast and their acting. There were twists I didn't expect and in one case I was shouting for one of the characters to do something, and she did it!

Loved the Cast - Great Build Up - Underwhelming Ending
Phenomenal cast and I love to watch Viola Davis, Colin Farrell, and Robert Duvall any chance I get. The twist caught me off guard which I loved but that was my problem with the film is that they could have built such a deeper more complex and cleverer movie if they just took the time to write it well. It had all the ingredients to be a great film from the cast to the back story, but it fell flat because they rushed the end and didn't explain much else of what was really going on, the why, or even what happened afterwards.Overall, it was an easy movie to watch while also playing on your phone, but it was underwhelming to say the least.

surprisingly good! At first I thought would be some kind of filler movie
But then I noticed the actors in it. I was surprised I hadn't heard of it.Script was very good, just when you think you figured out one angle, a different one crops up.I also liked that it was female-driven even though there were some GREAT male actors, the script lead with the female characters.Viola Davis was a standout, but all played their roles very well.

Good movie , great cast!
I found the actors in this movie to be exceptional. The intro screen captures each one of the main characters and is very telling. Start is a little slow but many surprises. I enjoyed the movie very much but for me it was the acting that stood out. The last few scenes, wow!

THE WIDOWS HAVE TO BECOME THEIVES
The film based on renowned author Lynda La Plante's book of the same name. The story tells of a robbery led by Harry Rawlings (Liam Neeson) that goes terribly wrong when all participants die when cornered after a chase. It turns out that Harry and his crew had stolen from crime boss Jamal Manning who needed the two million dollars to help finance his election ambitions, his opponent the equally underhanded operator Jack Mulligan (Colin Farrell) wants his money back and threatens Veronica (Viola Davis) Harry's widow giving her one month to pay him for her husband's deeds. Her Husband had left her a note of how to find his notebook which has plans for his next job, a 5 million dollar heist, certainly enough to give Jamal his money with 3 million to spare. She recruits two of the other widows Alice (Elizabeth Debicki) and Linda (Michelle Rodriguez) to assist, the fourth doesn't turn up for the initial meet-up, until now they didn't know each other,They will need to get a vehicle, weapons and indeed the location of Harry's plans..When Veronica's driver is killed they will need to recruit a replacement getaway-driver, Linda suggests her babysitterBelle (Cynthia Erivo)....the actual robbery target somewhat of a surprise perhaps. With a superb cast-list the film is worthy of a glance, though in my opinion, it does take a while to get going. The film has a few scenes of a sexual nature, along with several violent sequences, and a twist or two along the way.
