WHISTLE (FW20A)

I love the sound of this tin whistle it is absolutely perfect. It’s comfortable to hold and feels very well-built all around a wonderful instrument.

It sounds great. Even though on certain notes it sounds airy when played it keeps a good tone kind of like a flute does. For me at least, the C whistle takes a little more breath than a D whistle to reach the second octave but it gets easier. Overall I am happy with my C whistle and I play it interchangeably with my D whistle. It is a great addition to anyone's collection of whistles.

Generally, C penny whistles are airier sounding than the more traditional whistle in D. This Feadog C instrument is less airy than the Clarke C whistle I also own. Perhaps best, though, is the focus and projection. It is not overly loud, but it projects better than any other C whistle I've played. The only real negative is that it tends to be somewhat sharp in pitch. It should also be noted that Feadog penny whistles seem to be made from a heavy gauge of metal, so they are more substantial feeling than, say, Clarke penny whistles. I have reviewed Clarke instruments on Amazon and like their D instruments a lot. For a C instrument, though, the Feadog is superior. Another alternative to check out, though, is the Walton's C penny whistle. The Walton's that I also purchased through Amazon.com is very similar in construction to the Feadog, is also a product of Ireland, and sounds perhaps even a little more focused.

Unusably out of tune for ensemble playing of any kind. Tried to remove the mouthpiece to make it "tunable" but it won't budge.

I needed a decent whistle in the key of C in time for my St Pat's gig. After checking some reviews I decided to give Feadog a try. I'm glad I did because it arrived before the expected date and had a great tone.

I bought this whistle for my daughter, who expressed a wish to follow in my whistling footsteps. I've owned Clark, Generation, Sweetone, Ralph Cook, and Susato (hands down the best) whistles in the past and wanted to try something new. The body of the whistle is of good, solid quality and the mouthpiece is very ergonomic. The tone is a touch breathy, which I don't really mind. My only complaint is that the higher C (one octave above base C) is off pitch, nearly half a step flat. This can be compensated with some creative fingering (oox xxx), but it's a bit awkward and doesn't transfer well to playing other whistles or keys. I've heard older Feadogs are of much better quality. I expected better quality, especially as the whistle is made at home in Ireland, but I am a bit disappointed. It is still a playable whistle, but I think I'll look for something else for my daughter.
