I just opened mine. Yes they smell awful. If smell will not air out in 24 hrs. There getting returned. Stench is bad. I had to remove from house.

Q: Can these be washed in the washing machine on a gentle cycle?

I wash mine in cold water and in a mesh bag to keep from too much unnecessary "scrubbing" I do prefer handsoaking for a few minutes.

Q: What is the difference between the multicolor style and the classic style?

No difference. They are all nice

Q: Is the lining fabric or plastic?

The lining is black fabric. These are very nice bags. I bought them as Christmas gifts for my co-workers. Nice quality, pretty designs and good price
