This book is really great. If you have an addiction or know someone that has one it will help you understand it better.

Men who struggle with sexual addiction/pornography need a dose of God’s reality. Ted Roberts spoke directly to my heart and understands what I’m going through and provides a way out. You have to choose your path and follow it. There is hope. I thought I was alone in trying to figure this out. This book was the answer for the bondage I’ve been in and accurately describes the reasoning as well as the solution. When Ted Roberts first published this book in the early 2000s I dare say there weren't many pastors or Christian leaders openly addressing the problems of pornography and sexual addiction. This was a groundbreaking book for encouraging churches and pastors to openly and courageously address this topic. Since the publication of "Pure Desire" Roberts' ministry of the same name has gone on to publish many other helpful resources, especially the Seven Pillars of Freedom workbook and The Conquer Series video series. Those resources are more helpful than this book, but the book tells Roberts' story of how God led him into this form of ministry and offers good general advice for pastors and churches seeking to help those trapped in sexual addiction. The book also lays out Roberts' basic theories for overcoming sexual addiction.

I became a member of the Pure Desire group in my church to explore the topic of sexual brokenness. I have contemplated and wrestled with a homosexual orientation for the majority of my life. Although the major thrust of our local group is porn addiction and self gratification, I have had questions regarding sexual brokenness and sexual identity for most of my life. Exploring the ideas presented in Pure Desire is creating a greater reality of freedom and honesty and helping me to find answers to life long questions. (I also highly, highly, highly recommend reading Holy Sexuality by Christopher Yuan.) At the age of 60 I am finally beginning to understand how so many events in my life have shaped my early sexual orientation and working through those events honestly is guiding me towards a path of honesty and freedom. The level of honesty promoted in this book and in the Pure Desire accountability groups is life changing. I am highly impressed with this work.

Will take courage, persistence and intentionality to make it through this book but if you do your life will change

Everyone should read this book. No matter where you fit into the attack going on with pornography, this will either give you hope in the midst of what appears to be a hopeless situation, or it will alert you to the fight that is going on that you may be unaware of.It’s written in a style that will connect with everyone. Dr. Robert’s experience as a fighter pilot in Viet Nam as well as on the front line in the war waged by pornography gives him insight that the church is in desperate need of.Please read this book. If not for your sake, do it for your brothers (and yes, sisters) who need understanding and help as hell holds a tight grip on them. You might be surprised who you may be helping by learning about this life or death situation facing believers and families near and dear to you.

“Pure Desire: Helping People Break Free from Sexual Struggles” is a good book to help men caught in Satan’s schemes of sexual bondage. I will caution up front, if you are not interested in reading about the importance of Jesus Christ as a major factor in one’s recovery from sexual sin, then this book is not for you. Dr. Ted Roberts does a good job of showing that sexual struggles are not just a religious problem where one needs to pray more and try harder. He also shows that sexual struggles are also not just merely a psychological issue where one needs to identify past hurts, and identify triggers for relapse. Instead, Dr. Roberts presents a combined approach – he explains sexual bondage is not just about sex, but about self-medicating hurts, and he combines that with Biblical help to understand why men can get caught up in this lifestyle and feel helpless to escape (see Romans 7:14-25. Overcoming sexual struggles will take God’s help, support from others, and a desire for purity more than the desire to enjoy the pleasures that sexual sins offer.I view this book as more supplemental information for men in recovery than as being a true how-to guide. You can find online and in-person courses, and these will provide the practical steps to help men break free from sexual struggles.

The use of pornography has become a plague. PUREDESIRE is written by a Christian pastor and former US Marine, who served in Vietnam. It's aimed at Christians, but many of the insights will help everyone, whether they have a faith or not, to find freedom from porn or sexual addiction. for instance the book mentions that there are three circumstances which may predispose individuals to addiction (of some sort): 1. Growing up in a dysfunctional family, 2. Personal trauma, and 3 An addictive Society. Which may cover everyone! There is, of course, argument about whether to call this addiction. However, it's also very much a call to the Church at large and individual churches to get real (and open and honest) about this issue and provide a non-judgmental place for healing. Unfortunately, the Church generally finds it very difficult to deal with sexual issues like this. If porn or sexual addiction effects you (or you know someone it effects) read this and do something about it. On the basis of statistics in both the UK and the US my last sentence will cover about 100% of men! It's also a major problem for women (whether as other halves of men or as "consumers" themselves).
