My birds will not drink out of this, how can I encourage them?

Put something shiny, like a dime, in the cup. This is how my turkey poults learn to drink out of these.

Is algae easily cleaned from all parts?

I have not had a problem with algae, however I have taken mine apart and cleaned without problem. I did have to take a pipe cleaner and clean the tube between container and cup as the water was not coming through.

How is this automatic? In one of the pictures a person is manually refilling

You must manually refill the container, then the cup is automatically refilled from the container when the birds drink from the cup.

Can the cup be removed to just use the nipple?

No there is no nipple. The cup could be removed but then you would have to buy a separate nipple. No point in that because RentACoop sells one of these with a nipple rather than a cup.
