Approachable "Math-Heavy" Textbook, with some Flaws
I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. It was the first proper mathematics textbook that I had ever read on my own, and the first one that I have picked up since freshman Calculus ten years ago. Generally speaking, I thought the authors did an excellent job in the earlier portions of the book, introducing proofs and theorems in a cautious, slow-paced way that make them feel more digestible to students who likely prefer to review formal mathematics with as little formal proof-work as they can manage.Things get a little heavier in the latest chapters of the book. It's right around the chapters on formal languages (19-20) that the proofs start to get a little too lengthy and detailed, and by the end of the chapters on order notation and counting (21-25), I was too exhausted to even bother reading all of the proofs. I ended up skimming the final few chapters on probability and other topics because I grew frustrated and tired by all of the formal proof-work. I think the pacing should have been more consistent throughout. My recommendation is actually that readers skip around a bit to avoid the fatigue that I ended up feeling. Try jumping to 26-29 after you finish the chapters on graph theory, and then head back to 18-19, then forward to 30-31, then back to 21-25. That provides a better balance of theory and proof heavy chapters with more practical and quick-ready style chapters.I think this book could be substantially improved in the next edition if chapters 18-25 were rewritten to be more approachable and slow-paced, like the chapters on set and graph theory.

Praise for a Readable Discrete Mathematics Textbook
great, great resource for self-study. I can't praise the book enough for being readable. I tried to dive into contemporary resources from authors like Epps, Doer, and Lehaman, but this is simply the most introductory friendly material I've found. My only complaint (from the perspective of self-studying) is that the exercises, while robust, do NOT have answers in this textbook. What's worse is that, because the textbook is so recent, online resources to check your answers are scarce as the authors have done a good job at creating unique exercises, so the answers online do not exist. This is especially problematic when a lot of the questions are in-depth problem solving (not something you can plug into a calculator), so you're left in the dark about whether your approach to answering the exercises are correct.Again, this is from the perspective a student who is self-studying and not particular strong in mathematics.
