Surface roots. They do not root very far or deep. Your foundation will be fine.

I'm in Michigan. The sooner you can get these in the ground, the better. Wet them well and give them some protection from the winter like leaves or some kind of cover. The roots will set over the winter. If the ground is frozen by the time you get them, don't put them in. Put them in a protected spot and cover them well. Start them in the spring. My plants are 8-9 yrs now and 15-20ft. They like full sun

This is more like "food for thought", Tawm. See, I have the same desire with 50 trees I planted this spring.I want a fast windbreak, but not one that will block too much view. I calculate mine may be approaching 25 feet in 10-12 years.They are 5-6 feet apart and my soil has a soft shalelike limestone layer at about 2-3 feet.I hope this will be a barrier to growth over 25 or so feet. Additionally, if I see vigorous growth at 10-15 feet I may look at topping them to slow vertical growth.These efforts should allow me to have a wind barrier of 0-30 feet for the next 15-20 or 25 years.By then I will have used this barrier sufficiently to either leave it alone, or cut it all down and go back to the exposed view I have now. At a minimal cost, I may add!I hope this nonscientific input will help you in your decision process.

Yes there were 25 in my order. Those little trees are now 7 feet tall, I planted over 100 and they are just beautiful.
