Dobie was a great historian. I’d recommend this book to anyone

An interesting baseball article about Nolan Ryan quoted a story in this book. The story is about an early settler who founded the Reagan Ranch where I grew up hunting. I couldn't resist the intrigue... Facinating as that was, It was just one of many early stories saved and re-told by J. Frank Dobie, the literary giant that grew up down the road. Mr. Ryan raises beef cattle there now, his life's ambition; who knew? What a wonderful world, Thank you Frank.

Stories heard a hundred years ago, about the characters of people in Texas then (so I can compare with now). These days we say "pedal to the metal", but back then they would have said "whole hog", meaning "with their whole heart". It is a standard worth knowing more about.

I'm so glad Dobie made a point to preserve these stories for us Texans! Loved the book and was sad when it ended. I'll be ordering another Dobie book soon.

What can I say about Frank Dobie and his books on "Old Texas" and the West of yesteryear. The "greatest authority" on old Texas and the birth of the Cowboy in our nation. From Texas comes the cowboy, the tradition and the cattle that began the Wild and Wooly tales we all know so well. Frank Dobie is "the master" on the subject. I loved all his books and am still collecting them all.

Another great book by Mr. Dobie! This one deals with how many old ledgends around Texas got started. Wish I had had the fortune of being able to know this man and talk with him!
