Precursor and Building Block for your Brain Power!
Here's the scoop, I did the research so you don't have to... This stuff is legit and is helping in heaps! Literally! L-Tyrosine is a powerful aromatic amino acid that is a building block for dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and thyroid hormones. Tyrosine supplements are nootropics and adaptogens that help with performance during times of stress. Many people find that it helps significantly with fatigue from stress. L-Tyrosine is produced within the body from a variety of dietary sources. Its primary roles are protein synthesis and maintaining healthy brain chemistry by providing the material from which dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine are produced. These three vital neurotransmitters, known as catecholamines, have a profound effect on energy levels, mood, motivation, and cognitive function. Though L-tyrosine doesn’t directly stimulate the production of these neurotransmitters, it does provide a “buffer” of the raw material the brain needs to produce them, particularly beneficial when stress has depleted their levels. L-Tyrosine also helps regulate the production of certain hormones and is necessary for the creation of the pigment melanin, which is present in skin, hair, and eyes. In addition, L-tyrosine is chemically related to thyroid hormones and may enhance weight loss by suppressing appetite and improving the body’s ability to burn fat. Because the body can produce adequate amounts of L-tyrosine, supplementation isn’t essential for basic health. However, studies suggest that taking additional L-tyrosine can have both physical and cognitive benefits, particularly in scenarios that involve physical or environmental stressors. Benefits and Effects There is robust evidence for the effectiveness of L-tyrosine supplementation, particularly regarding cognitive enhancement, mood and motivation improvement, and mitigating the effects of stress on the mind. Some of the most commonly attributed benefits of L-tyrosine include the following: Cognitive Enhancement Under Stress A 2015 review of more than a dozen studies found that tyrosine loading effectively offset working memory and information processing deficits created by environmental stressors such as extreme weather or extreme cognitive demand. The review speculated that this effect might be explained by the fact that tyrosine provides a “buffer” of raw material from which the brain can produce neurotransmitters, effectively neutralizing the depletion that stress creates. The review concluded that there is evidence that healthy individuals exposed to demanding situational conditions may benefit from supplemental L-tyrosine. A 1999 military study of cadets on a combat training course showed that a week of L-Tyrosine supplementation significantly lowered systolic blood pressure.[2] The participants receiving L-tyrosine also performed better on memory and tracking tasks than those receiving a placebo. Sleep-deprived individuals receiving supplemental L-tyrosine performed significantly better at a variety of cognitive and psychomotor tasks than a similar group which was given placebo in a 1995 study. Working Memory Improvement Under Increased Cognitive Demand A 2013 study investigating the effect of L-tyrosine on adults doing a progressively challenging mental task found that participants who took supplemental tyrosine did better on the more difficult levels of the task but showed little or no improvement on the easier levels. The researchers said the results confirm the concept that L-tyrosine selectively targets cognitive control situations, providing more resources only when more control is needed. Increased Cognitive Flexibility A small 2015 study involving 22 healthy adults showed that supplemental L-tyrosine enhanced cognitive flexibility, the ability to switch between tasks or modalities of thought. This result was attributed largely to the fact that L-tyrosine increases brain levels of dopamine, which is believed to control cognitive flexibility. ADHD Treatment and Focus Enhancement A 2011 study of both adult and pediatric ADHD patients showed that 77% of patients treated with L-tyrosine alone showed significant improvement over a period of 10 weeks. Further studies indicated that the positive effect of pharmaceutical ADHD medication was markedly enhanced by the simultaneous administration of L-tyrosine. Anecdotally, even individuals without ADHD report enhanced focus from L-tyrosine supplementation.

Helps with energy and alleviates depression when taken with 5-HTP
I got off antidepressants using 5-HTP and L-Tyrosine in a 1:10 ratio, per recommendation of my naturopath. This was really amazing because when I tried to taper my antidepressants without supplements, I went from feeling good to feeling some of the absolute worst depression I've experienced, and I've struggled with depression most of my life. Once I added 5-HTP and Tyrosine I was able to taper off the antidepressants with minimal side effects. 5-HTP helps the body produce serotonin, while L-Tyrosine helps the body produce dopamine, which somehow balances that out. It's important to take them together because supplementing one in high levels like I am without adding in the other can create an imbalance in your brain chemicals. 5-HTP on it's own has a slightly sedating effect, so it's good to take it at night, but I take part of my dose in the morning with Tyrosine and don't have a problem. Taking the supplements in pill form was getting expensive (much more so than the antidepressants), so I decided to try BulkSupplements, which are significantly cheaper than getting them in capsules. I have no interest in trying to make my own capsules, so I just mix the powers with water and drink it fast while holding my breath. It works! Figuring out the dosage was a little tricky, but here is what I do: In the a.m. (right after I get up) I mix 1/16 tsp (approx. 100 mg) 5-HTP + 1 tsp (approx. 2000 mg) Tyrosine In the p.m. (just before I go to bed) I mix 1/8 tsp (approx. 200 mg) 5-HTP + 1 tsp (approx. 1000 mg) Tyrosine I do the different dosages because Tyrosine is slightly energizing while 5-HTP is slightly sedating. I tried doing the entire dosage of Tyrosine in the morning and the entire dosage of 5-HTP at night and felt very irritable during the day. Tyrosine on it's own can help with energy and focus, but in too high of a dosage or without the balance with 5-HTP it can cause irritability or even a jittery feeling. When I reduced the dosage slightly I noticed a difference in my mood, so I know it's having a significant effect. The Tyrosine powder has a slightly bitter flavor. It's not very pleasant, but I take it so quickly that it doesn't really matter to me. I'm taking a relatively high dosage because, as I said, I'm using them to replace anti-depressants. I'd recommend talking to a naturopath about dosages and what might be right for you, and I definitely recommend taking 5-HTP with a 1:10 ratio of Tyrosine. When I asked my primary care doctor about supplements for depression, she had no idea what I was talking about, and instead put me on anti-depressants. She also recommended tapering antidepressants in a way that was incredibly harmful to me (needless to say she's no longer my doctor), so be wary of primary care doctors when it comes to this sort of thing. General physicians are well trained on a lot of things, but supplements and diet are generally not among them. If you are more of a do-it-yourself-er, then I'd highly recommend the book The Mood Cure by Julie Ross: http://www.amazon.com/Mood-Cure-4-Step-Program-Emotions--Today/dp/0142003646/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1400876462&sr=1-1&keywords=the+mood+cure It details how to figure out what supplements you may need and how much. Overall, this is a high quality and effective supplement.

Found Ideal Method to Prepare as Suspension
I increased my rating from 4 to 5 stars because I realized there was a much easier way to prepare my L-Tyrosine such that it is easier to measure out a consistent amount as opposed to the way I had been doing it previously. I still mix 32 oz at a time as a suspension. I originally diluted it such that 1 tablespoon would provide one dose. The problem was that the suspension was too thin, and it would start to settle almost immediately after I stopped shaking it. I now concentrate it such that 1 dose = 1 teaspoon. Now when shaken, it doesn't even start to separate for a few minutes because of the thickness. As an added bonus, the 32 oz of suspension lasts 3 times as long as when I was mixing for 1 tablespoon doses. To make it as bit more palatable, I add 8mL of Mio Fruit Punch flavoring MiO Liquid Flavored Water Enhancer, Fruit Punch, 1.62 Ounce Bottle so it actually tastes good! It ends up looking almost exactly like Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto - See picture), so if that is a problem for anyone for some reason, I'm sure a different flavor of Mio would work just as well. (Original review) Great product at a great price as usual. The only reason I took away a star is because of how I prepare all of my products, which is to mix a batch at a concentration such that 1 tablespoon = 1 serving and apparently L-Tyrosine is not soluble enough in water to prepare it as a solution. (I even tried 500mg per 2oz water, and most of it still did not dissolve.) Not an issue with the product itself, just that this bulk powder does not lend itself as well as others for the process I use. So now one of my bottles of supplements is technically a suspension as opposed to a solution. Just have to remember to shake it before dispensing. I just realized I took away a star because I need to shake the bottle first. I must admit that makes me sound a bit lazy and.or weak. Maybe I need another supplement that will enhance my bottle shaking ability. :-)

Incredible product, saves me a ton of money..
I use L-Tyrosine in a homemade pre workout drink, and find it helps amplify the effects of Caffeine Anhydrous another supplement I use in my pre work out drink prior to weight lifting. This helps give me the energy I need to get me thru my workouts. Me and my young adult kids are avid weight lifters and have tried many pre-made pre workout supplements and have noticed using this along with other supplements from this company that are numbers have improved, weights, reps etc. Not only have our workouts been stronger but the cost has been reduced to a third of commercial products. I have found that most of the over the counter pre work out supplements fall far short from recommended requirements. I can adjust my needs as I feel necessary at the cost of about $.05 cents per serving. My overall workout formula costs me $.33 cents per serving compared to some that are well over $1, multiply this by 3-4 days per week and 3 people the costs were way to high. This product gives us what we need at a higher dose then commercial store products and a fraction of the price. I use 1 teaspoon in 12 ounces of water along with some other supplements and I add some artificial sweetener and some flavoring. This is the cheapest by far you will find anywhere per serving. 2 grams of this product (1t) cost me $.045, literally less then a nickel per serving and the 2lb bag I have gives me about 2500 servings.. This is effective in assisting caffeine to give me the energy to get thru my workout.

Perfect Powder!!
I have struggled lately with being able to focus as much. I have been burning the candle at both ends, so I am grateful I found this product! I’ve heard that this L-Tyrosine can be a highly effective nootropic for boosting cognitive function. Almost immediately I noticed this really helps with stress and is particularly helpful in maintaining cognitive performance when you’re under practically any kind of stress. If you’re unsure if this will help you, give it a try! I have heard others have had success when dealing with ADHD/ADD using this when stacking with ALCAR (Acetyl-L-Carnitine). ALCAR easily crosses the blood-brain barrier and it’s particularly effective. If you’re considering trying this supplement, jump in…you won’t be disappointed!

Think twice, and google the side effects before using.
Increased energy, increased mental alertness, elevated mood, increased visual clarity as well. What can I say? And it seemed to come on in about 20 minutes with essentially no taste (I stir it in plain water), doesn't clump up. I've been taking 1/2 tsp twice or three times per day. No problems. Feels natural, not like caffeine or stimulants. LATER: after taking this product for a month, which amount I lowered to about 600 mg twice a day during that time, I found these unwanted symptoms in addition to the positive ones listed above: increased irritability, angry outbursts, inability to pronounce occasional familiar words (anomic aphasia). It seems to work like a mild form of amphetamine, with the initial elevation and subsequent irritation, etc. Even in the small amounts I took it. So for some folks this might be great, but for me (and a friend taking it at the same time) it was NOT.
