Clarity over quantity
If you spend everyday in the woods and need to be aware of the finer distinctions between hawthorns, then the bigger, glossier tree guides are for you. Personally, I find them almost overwhelming in their detail. The Golden Guides were pitch-perfect in the simplicity married to precision. I've used these books with numerous children to help inspire their passion for trees: they were so clear and artistically managed that four-year olds have gone on nature walks with me and managed to properly identify sassafras and different types of pine. The clarity of the Golden Guide Trees more than compensates for its smaller size. Highly recommended.

The best!
I own several copies of this book, and also others from this series. They are concise but informative, and also fun to read. In my opinion they are the best nature guides. Other guides may go into more detail, but the basics are covered here...I recommend!
