Good thing it was inexpensive.
I got this camera for a trip to the Caribbean and wanted an inexpensive water proof camera that was small but not expensive like a Go Pro. I did some test before we left and found the still pictures were OK but not great. The video was much the same. We tested it for leakage and its ability to float and found it was fine. First day of our trip we went in the water and shot a few still pictures. Got out and set the camera to video and then went back in, it started to record but when I stopped it and tried to start it again the screen went black and the busy light was on. Tried to turn it off but the camera would not respond. Put the camera in my pocket and checked it a couple times over the next few minutes and found the screen black and the busy light still on. Could not get the camera to work again. Checked later to see if it had corrected itself and found it had floated out of my pock and was gone. Oh well that solved that problem. So if you happen to find a Vivitar DVR785HD floating in the south Caribbean you will know where it came from. Let me know if it ever came back to life. Like I said, good thing it was cheap. I won't be buying another one and don't recommend you buy one either. I would have been nice if it had had a place for a strap to connect to on the waterproof case. It didn't hence the lost camera. If it had had a place for a strap I would still have it and would have returned that piece of trash. Live and learn. Pay more get better.

A good camera for close work or to catch the ambiance ...
A good camera for close work or to catch the ambiance of an area from a distance. Battery life is very good. Mic is placed at the rear of this model and is the quality of a cell phone. This mic placement is best for close commentary from the back of the camera when not in water proof case. Focus is infinite and angle of capture is wide so just start the camera and face it towards your subject. Some may find the color over-hyped (saturated) but I bet the over whelming majority of consumers will prefer their videos this way, vibrant. Works as well at twilight or indoors as it does in full sun.The quality of video for the price is beyond words. You can easily afford two and shoot two angles at once.

EASY and OKAY but DAMAGED BY HEAT
Don't leave this in the glove compartment of a car in Florida. Images now have a weird magenta overcast.--------------------------------------------------------------------Good: No movie mode. That way I don't find myself taking a shaky movie clip when I just wanted a picture. Another camera I had had buttons on the top and buttons on the side and I had to memorize a sequence which I forgot. This has one button to turn it on and one to take a picture.Mediocre: Soft focus. Better than previous Vivitar waterproof cameras. The housing over the lens is optically flat. The pics are about 1280x1024 but the resolution of the camera is only worth about 480x360. Still this is not for keepsake pix but to illustrate my emails. Since it is waterproof it is good for the beach. I checked with a fingernail and the point of a knife. There was a removable plastic on the backscreen but nothing on the lens or housing. I could try picking harder at the lens but I fear damaging it. There is a switch on the side to select 640x480. Use that.CORRECTION: There is an undocumented switch on the right side. It has 3 positions. Top is the alleged HD mode. Middle is the movie mode. Bottom is the 640 camera mode. I see no microphone opening so movies will be silent.Poor: This is supposed to be a "DVR 785HD". That is on the Amazon page and on the camera itself. The online manuals for this refer to a non-existent mode switch. Vivitar needs different model numbers for different models.Poor: No ring for a lanyard on the waterproof case. In a water environment the only way to keep from losing your camera is to have a cord and wrap around your hand or neck or anchor it to a swim suit. This camera was only intended for riding your bike in the rain. The threaded hole at the base seems to be 1/4"-20 so something could be done with a bolt and some glue.Poor: The pix are stored with the extension ".JPG". I know from previous experience when I could not upload pix to Amazon I could not. I think that Amazon was expecting something standard like ".jpg". We are not using DOS anymore. Vivitar should use lower case like everyone else.Poor: The manual is too small to read. You must look up an online version and not at Vivitar's site. They don't do that. Since Vivitar uses ambiguous model numbers that likely won't help either.

Very bad.
Pretty little camera. But. I used it to video a short (2 minute) run with my mountain bike. The picture was blurry and had a redish tint on the lower half of the picture from start to finish. I retied taking a short video with water proof case on and off and got the same red tint on the picture both times. I didn't try a still pic, didn't see any need to. Somthing must be wrong with the lens.

Unexpectedly Superb.
I bought this camera to mount on my ATV while riding the Alpinr Loop mountain trails of Colorado ($38). My friend paid $300 for her go pro camera for the same trip. The Vivitar included led screen, zoom, mounting bracket and many other features which the go pro did not. After reviewing comparable trail videos from each camera, I was pleasantly surprised at the clarity of the Vivitar. The go pro was a little bit clearer, but not over $200 worth (in my opinion). Also, the Vivitar held its charge for over 2 days riding, the go pro charge would not last a 4 hour ride. The Vivitar is an excellent buy for the price.Mike, Dallas
