Declining quality, but still a decent purchase when at right price point
So I buy a pair of these every nine months to a year. I don't wear them merely weekends. I wear them a LOT, probably 50% of time or more. I find they fit well, and are consistent on sizing and arch, allowing me to buy them online without worrying about what to expect with fit.In terms of usage type, I do a bit of hiking in them, but usually use stronger mid ankle for that. Mainly my use is basic daily use with some recreation.I will say though that these hiking shoes have been declining in quality. other reviewers noting that are correct. For example five years ago one could expect this model to last perhaps 50% longer than today. The specific flaw is in seam/glue where front rubber material separates from canvas/leather type material. This is maddening since my initial pairs all lasted a good amount longer and pretty much everything failed at same time. To have a repeated single point of failure, noted by many buyers, means a significant drop in value. Here is the thing though, if you tick the various colors here you are likely to find some steeply discounted ones, under seventy beans. At that price, if you find the first pair you bought fit well, you are getting a decent value.

Still the best all around hiking shoe for the price
I hike frequently on rugged New England terrain and during the past 10 years Merrill has become my go-to. I'm starting on my 2nd pair of Moab 2 Vents. The first one took seven years of 3-season daily use, on the trail, around the office, and only the last couple years I demoted them to yard work. They are beat up but only just starting to come apart, and still serviceable for short jaunts. Judging from my first walk with the new ones I expect the same longevity, and am glad they haven't messed with the styling much - still good looking and comfy both on the trail and around town.I also can vouch enthusiastically for the Moab 3's which handle my harder climbs with heavier loads, and the waterproof Geomorphs which have served as my main winter boot. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars here is that the material they are now using over the ankle padding (on Moab 3 as well) seems to collect debris more easily and funnels it down into the shoe. This can be an annoyance on gravelly terrain and bushwacks - gaiters may come in handy.

Still a great shoe
I use this shoe for any important outdoor work where I need good foot support and durability including hiking, camping, roofing, construction, digging post holes (shovel work), working in my woods, landscaping... The shoes are breathable yet durable, of high-quality construction, and I just beat the hell out of them over the months of serious and continual use. Just bought a new pair after completely destroying my old ones, maybe 3 years of brutal abuse. the soles finally gave out and began disintegrating but not for poor quality materials or workmanship. Sometimes I wish they had a steel toe, but they wouldn't be hikers then.Anyone who complains about these Moab hikers or the cost needs to provide a better, time-tested, condition-brutal alternative. And they won't be able to. I guarantee it. So just buy them. Thank you Merrell. I'm happy to pay the price.Jeff N.Cassopolis, MI

ORDER 1/2 SIZE LARGER than with original Moabs
Been wearing the original Moabs daily for the past ten-ish years. These Moab 2s are not the same shoe. The best you can do is to order a half size larger than you normally would with Moabs; it's still not the same comfrotable-out-of-the-box feel that I've always had with the previous version, but it will settle in to something similar. I had ordered two pairs thinking that I'd messed it up, or that there was a difference in fit between the HIkers and Ventillators; there's not, they just changed the dang shoe. Why? I don't know what the folks at Merrell were thinking by messing with a shoe that has such a strong following- but they did (I'm assuming it was a cost-cutting measure, although the build quality still feels solid, so far). The back of the shoe (ankle area) doesn't feel quite right anymore, and being a half size too big my feet were floating around for a couple of weeks until they broke in, sort of. In the end, they do feel okay, just not what I've come to expect from the fit of these shoes. Discouraging really. BRING BACK THE ORIGINALS, DANG IT!

Something's not right.....
Wish I could put my finger on it, but something is off. Didn't dive into reviews and I bought the exact same as I always do (10.5 Wide). Have not broken them in yet but different from most reviewers, these feel big and boxy. Both older pair of Moabs (and the waterproof Merrell hikers) in the pic have been race ready out of the box and gone through many countries in all weather for years as daily wear. Wish I could put my finger on it, maybe as other reviewers have said Merrell's materials and processes have changed. Guessing someone again doing a SIx Sigma project on an item I've loved for years. Will update when they break in........

Very happy with comfort and performance.
I have a wide foot, might have tried a 9.5 wide but was not available so went with a 10. I was wearing a thin no-show liner sock under the regular sock as this sometimes helps with preventing blisters.I only had time for a 3.5 walk with the dog to break these in before going on a backpacking trip. These were a little hard in the heal area on the concrete but great on a dirt trail.I used these for a last minute backpacking trip to Half Dome in Yosemite. The shoes held up well and had good grip on the dirt and walking along the granite which is the walking surface on parts of the trail.Without a lot of break-in time they were comfortable, gripped well and stayed dry in shallow puddles and going through the Mist Trail with it raining on us for four miles. All in all these performed very well in many categories, I would have expected strengths in some areas and then maybe a few weaknesses in others but I did not see any weaknesses, for me at least, even with very little break in time.

Very Disappointed
Even the very lightest of rain showers results in wet socks for me. I know they're not meant to be water-proof, but I expected some tiny semblance of water-resistance of which there is none whatsoever. Even walking through wet grass results in wet socks for me. I had "breathable" North Face walking shoes before and never experienced this level of incompetence with them.Perhaps I just have a defective pair as they are not fit for purpose as far as I'm concerned.

A thing of beauty.
These shoes are more like a friend to me than a material possesion. What I love about them is the older and more beaten they get the better they look. For some reason all shoes i have owned before start to look terrible after they have been used for some time, these still look good to me 13 months in after heavy daily use for work 10 hours per day 5 days a week as a courier. Theyve been used in snow, rain, and on all surfaces. I wish the toe piece was leather or something elsw other than the black synthetic material as they have holes and cracks in them now but not to the point where I cant still use them. The vibram sole are now flat without grip but still plenty of thickness in them. The sole also has become unglued in some parts but still usable. They seem to have lasted twice as long as other. shoes so far and I rekon they will last about 18mths total for me. If the toe piece didnt crack and the sole had no glue issues I would give 5 stars. They are very comfortable and once you have worn these there is no turning back. No other shoe compares it is indeed The Mother of All Boots. I have bought a second pair now.

Extremely disappointing
I have worn Merrell Moab 1 for the past 7 years , the most comfortable out of the box walking shoe I have ever worn and I average 70 miles per week. This new Moab 2 was uncomfortable from day one and I immediately started to get blisters, heel pain and foot arch pain. After 3 months the situation has not improved and I am now wearing old Moab 1 as I search for a new brand. I could not be more dissapointed as a long standing and loyal customer to dreading walking in them. How could Merrell ruin such a fantastic shoe.

The size dilemma, free returns
Due to the sizing issues with this shoe, my best advice is to obtain a good deal with free returns. I happily paid Β£63 on Amazon with free returns πI have wide feet and usually take a size 9UK in Clarks, Asics & Brooks. Buying shoes online tends to be hit & miss, especially with having wide feet. After reading other reviews of the Merrell Moab 2 Vent, my best guess was a 9.5UK.For the first 1000 steps around the house I found the left shoe perfect and the right a bit nippy around the toes. After a first 10k walk, mostly on pavements, I've experienced the same, although the tighter right shoe seems to be loosening up. Most importantly, I don't have any blisters and overall I loved my first walk in these. Like others have mentioned, the shoes are very stable and grippy. They are also extremely comfortable. From my first experience, I suggest going a half size up if wearing trainer socks and going for short walks and a full size up for thicker socks and long walks.Free returns is essential unless you are confident about your size.

Absolute comfort and legendary durability !
Uses the same lasts as the Moab Mk1 shoe, and fits the same ( I take UK 10 shoe and the UK 11 Merrell fits perfectly ).Unsurpassed levels of comfort and excellent arch, heel and ankle support on long day hikes, I have never ever experienced any soreness or foot swelling with any Merrell shoes. Air cushion absorbs impact, which is great as 99% of my hiking is on tarmac.Durability is fantastic, the uppers and Vibram soles wear and wear and wear for thousands of miles/kms plus they look far more respectable than training shoes, and are an excellent choice for everyday casual footwear if you care about comfort and your foot health. These shoes are not waterproof, and will sometimes slip on mud, wet leaves, wet rock, as the sole compound is fairly hard ( for wearability ), these are ultimately a good weather shoe.
