In Season: Cooking with Vegetables and Fruits

Beautiful
I absolutely love this book. The effort that was put into this is amazing. Raven splits up veggies/fruits by their peak month, gives an intro to each of her picks, and follows with recipes ranging from simple to moderate. It's clear she prefers to preserve the food she is cooking and tells you in which month they peak so that you can dress it simply b/c it's at its most flavorful.I really wanted this book b/c often certain veggies look so incredible at the supermarket, but I'm not sure what to do with them. This book makes it really simple without even knowing what other ingredients you need b/c the recipes call for basic food staples you likely have!

Beautiful book, but recipes are lacking
This is a beautiful book, with lots of lovely color photographs. However, many of the photographs are not of the actual recipes. The recipes are okay. Many of them are not things that I would actually make, i.e. there is a lot of baking, jam making, ice creams. Also the fruit/veggies that are readily available (melons, sweet peppers, etc) often have fewer recipes than obscure/expensive fruits/veggies (gooseberries, currants, zuccini flowers, etc). It was interesting to read, but I am returning it because I don't think I will ever actually use it.Note: I have not made any of the recipes, because I struggled to find something that I actually wanted to make and could get all the ingredients for at a reasonable price.

It's so nice to find out what veggies are 'in season
It's so nice to find out what veggies are 'in season.' We have collectively forgotten this information sinceeverything is available at your local grocery store (in the USA) all the time. Also great to have such tastyrecipes for seasonal fare.

very disappointed
the book itself is a quality product with nice print and pictures. My disappointment is that this was written for a Untied Kingdom audience using some products that are not common in the United States. Crème fraiche and ginger wine were called for in the last recipe I did. I know what crème fraiche is but none of my local stores carry it. Probably Whole Foods had it, but didn't want to drive across town to find out.I had never heard of ginger wine. Also, nothing listed for prep or cooking times.

In Season- An Honest Review
This is probably one of my top, favourite cookbooks. I found this in my local library and just had to have it. I love seasonal cooking and I love fresh ways of preparing vegetables and fruit- this book as both. 'In Season' is a seasonal cookbook, with recipes that are categorized by produce in season, from January to December. Covered are herbs, vegetables, and fruits, though it should be made clear that this book is not vegetarian or vegan (dairy and eggs are used, as well as a very few meat recipes.) These recipes are gorgeous and delicious. This book is becoming worn with use in my kitchen simply because I can always find something to cook at any time of the year, and I know the recipes will taste good. No processed ingredients are called for, just fresh food. Many vegetables and fruits are covered, so this is great for those who grow their own, support their farmer's markets or get CSA boxes. Personally, 'In Season' has ruined other seasonal or CSA cookbooks for me. I've tried others, but they don't compare to this obvious labour of love. These recipes are unique, creative, and reliable. A lot of produce is covered here and all though you may recognize some standard recipes, most of them are different and will inspire you in the kitchen. Recipes I would recommend are 'Ithaca Pie', 'Strawberry Black Pepper Icecream', 'Parsley Soup', 'Treviso Lasagna', 'Radicchio & Lemon Pasta', 'Rosemary Flatbread', 'Patmos Chickpeas', 'Purple Sprouting Broccoli Pasta', 'Spring Greens Risotto', 'Rhubarb Syllabub', 'Rhubarb Tart', 'Spring Herb & Wild Greens Pasta', 'Warm Chickpea & Parsley Salad', 'Saute of Peas & Lettuce' (that was a revelation), 'Globe Artichoke Tart', 'Pea & Ricotta Tart w/ Thyme Pastry', 'Glazed Summer Vegetables', 'Radish Top Pasta', 'Beets & Mini Onions w/ Bechamel', 'Frosted Red Currants w/ Chantilly Cream', 'Zucchini & Lemon Salad', 'Crisp Zucchini Wedges w/ Anchovy Mayonnaise', 'Roasted Zucchini, Eggplant, and Onion w/ Balsamic Sauce', 'Zucchini Coconut Soup', 'Quick Lavender Icecream', 'Lavender Creme Brulee', 'Lemon Bean Salad', 'Gooseberry Tart', 'Jane's Gooseberry & Elderflower Sorbet', 'Baked Cream w/ Gooseberries', 'Basil Icecream', 'Halloumi, Mint, Cilantro, & Dill Pitas', 'Red Onion Marmalade' (this is amazing on grilled cheese), 'Onion Tart from Beamish & McGlue', 'Meringue Roulade w/ Raspberries' (gorgeous), 'Rice Pudding w/ Raspberry & Redcurrant Jam', 'Baked Tomatoes w/ Cream', 'Cleopatra's Tomato Soup', 'Sungold Tomato Focaccia', 'Raw Tomato Pasta', 'Tomato Bruscetta', 'Quick Tomato Tart', 'Pizza', 'Stuffed Tomatoes w/ Roasted Potatoes', 'Rosemary Saddleback Potatoes', 'Stuffed Baked Potatoes w/ Pesto', 'Jane's Chanterelles', 'Hazelnut Biscotti', 'Roasted Pepper Soup', 'Grilled Corn w/ Thyme Butter or Chili Jam', 'Pureed Brussels Sprouts in Nutmeg Cream', 'Cranberry Tart w/ Toffee Sauce', 'Roasted Parsnips Rolled in Parmesan', and 'Roast Rutabaga with Maple Syrup' are just a few of the gems that are in this cookbook. There are many more recipes for these and other veggies such as kohlrabi, kale, etc. contained within. I hope you will add 'In Season' to your shelf and that it will serve you as well as (or even better than) it has served me these past few years. Enjoy!

Wonderful Cooking Book--ESPECIALLY FOR GARDENERS
I've absolutely fallen in love with this book. Not only does it give delicious and achievable recipes, it is also a great way to plan one's garden. I'm totally designing my garden this year around the "seasons" in this book. And I find the author absolutely charming.
