I have a huge library of books about European and American impressionism, so I wanted to learn more about Potthast even though I wasn'tt especially crazy about his work. This book is a pleasant surprise containing many images I've never seen before, and some at a quality level that have raised my opinion of Potthast significantly.

A lovely book
I had seen several works by Mr. Potthast but only recently became interested in seeing the output of his very prolific career. He certainly captured the "smiling aspects of art". What a nice relief from all the lacerating and screaming works by contemporary artists. There are few works that leave one wondering about the story behind the sitter's eyes but for the most part, his work was an enjoyable glimpse of delightful summers. I can almost smell the sea air, marvel at the lovely children playing on the shore, and feel the sun of a perfect summer afternoon. What a nice respite and to be able to open a book and visit this happy place..

Thanks again
Lovely airy book of an under rated American Impressionist. Makes one long for the quiet, fragrant days of summer. Recommended.

Incredible Detail and In-depth Research
As a relative of E.H. Potthast, I thought that I knew all of the details of his life, but after reading this amazing book I learned so much more about his journey to becoming the one of the most talented and prolific American Impressionist artists.
