The New IPA: Scientific Guide to Hop Aroma and Flavor

Great scientific guide about hops!
If you are looking to understand the science behind hops and how to use them in recipe formulation, this is the book for you. It covers which hops to use and elaborates on the “why” behind the timing if hop additions. Awesome book if you are already into home brewing and you are curious about IPA recipes. Great if you have any biochemistry background as well.

Excellent Book
I suppose it is hard for one book to satisfy the needs for all readers. This particular book is NOT a recipe book, and I would say it isn't for the novice who is just trying to learn how to make beer, but for the intermediate to advance brewer and maybe even professional brewers who want to take things to the next level!Janish fills just about every page with helpful insights and studies around the way hops interact with the various elements of beer; from water chemistry, malt proteins, effects on aging hops and the flavor compound changes, in depth analysis of dry hopping from the types of compounds, to the amount used, and even goes into making a dry-hop only beer and scientifically analyzes what elements are in the beer, as well as several tasting panel studies of how those beers were perceived by tasters.I tend to like to understand the 'why' behind the theories, so this book definitely satisfies that scientific curiosity, but I do like how he breaks it down into basic terms at the end of each study - so if you don't really care to know why, got lost in all of the details or just want to know the outcome, you can just skip to the end of the study. Each chapter also has a summary of the key points discussed, so if you prefer a more cliff-note approach, he's got you covered there as well.If you've read "For the Love of Hops" by Stan Hieronymus and "IPA" by Mitch Steele (which definitely has more recipes), this book gives you a lovely trifecta of hoppy beer knowledge that will arm you to compete in this emerging age of IPAs where haze is the craze, and hop juiciness is king.Cheers!

A deep dive into hops science
Just to be clear: this is NOT a recipe book, nor is it a book for beginners. What this book aims for is a deeper understanding of hops, their components, and the various processes of hopping beers. It's the closest thing to a real textbook on modern hops science. If you brew IPAs and want to step up your hops-fu, this book is absolutely essential. You will find it packed with useful and fascinating information on every facet of hops flavor and aroma, and the methods used. Even if you're not into IPAs, there is still much to be gleaned from it.If you are beginning your journey into the workings of hops, I would suggest you begin with Stan Hieronymus' For The Love Of Hops. After that, this book will take you farther down the hop-head rabbit hole. Which ain't a bad place to be if you love brewing top-notch beer.

Brewers: Read this book now
This is simply one of the best brewing books I’ve ever read. Though very technical, Scott does a great job of explaining the applications of his research in easily-understood terms. IT’S NOT JUST FOR IPA’S! Much of the content pertains to sound general brewing practice, including things like how beer clarity is affected through raw materials and brewery procedures. If you brew, get this book and read it now. You will be amazed at how often you say “Wow, that’s great information.”

Best brewing book I've ever read.
As the primary contributor of the Milk The Funk Wiki, Scott Janish's new book on NEIPA might be the best brewing book I've ever read, period. Scott dives deep into hundreds of studies and extracts the important information. He not only discusses the methods of the science, but he references each study so that the reader can read the full studies if they want. I wish more brewing authors wrote this way instead if just declaring dogma without citing sources. Good job, Scott, words can't even express how impressive this book is to me. I don't write book reviews, but I had to write this one.

Great information
Great for all homebrewers trying to perfect their craft. It is little scattered with information and not very linear but is a wealth of knowledge none the less.

Interesting read for the NEIPA nerd, but usefulness to the homebrew is an open question.
I have regularly visited Scott's blog for over a year and look forward to visiting his new brewery.I really like his somewhat experimental approach to brewing and you can detect his passion andcuriosity for brewing science throughout the book and blog. While I completely understand, and evenapplaud, the choice to self-publish, an experienced editor with a scientific background really couldhave helped the book. Tons of information to comb through and the end of chapter summaries areuseful, but one really must wonder about the generality of the findings in many of the cited studies. It appears as though a lot of new information is coming to light in brewing science and a major takeawayis that seemingly minor variables may determine an outcome (see biotransformation).I liked the book, am satisfied with the purchase, and look forward to an updated version 10 years fromnow to see how this story unfolds.

Hands down the best treatise for brewing NE IPA's
I've been following Scott Janish blogs ever since I found his Pliny the Elder recipe blog several years ago. It's hard to find people on the internet that actually know what the hell their talking about. And his blogs are absolutely enlightening, insightful & educational for the serious brewer. Do not, even for the briefest of moments, hesitate to buy his book if you are looking to brew an NE. It's easily the best resource you will ever find. Scott does the due diligence and research for every brewing nuance that you will require. And I've only recently just finished the first chapter.
