Review: Ever so great to read a novel written by an adult, writer who knows her period of time! - This book is really a joy to read with words and expressions that fit the period and descriptions that fill your mind with pictures of the people involved! The story line is great, the hero and heroine fit so perfectly together personality wise. The heroine is in great danger and completely out of options and she finds the hero who is a calm, solid man who analyses problems and people so very well that he is a great calming influence to the heroine! HE has personal tragedy to over come but has finally found someone he trusts and the feeling is mutual. Watching these two people gradually "see" each other as their true soul-mates and over-come the intrigue is really a joy after so many novels written in sloppy modern language and with sloppy plots. I'm ever so glad to read a book by one of the master story tellers! ENJOY---I did! Review: Good Historical Romance - My rating for When a Duchess Says I Do, by Grace Burrowes: 4 stars. I have read a lot of Grace Burrowes books, and she is a talented writer. While this book, and the other books in this series are not quite as good as some of her earlier books -- they are still very good. The books in the Roques to Riches series should be read in order, beginning with My One and Only Duke, because each book builds on information that is revealed in the earlier books. The books would not be as enjoyable if the reader wasn't aware of earlier information that had been revealed. I liked this book a great deal, and absolutely adored the developing romance between Duncan and Matilda. I also liked that Duncan tried so hard to help Matilda, even when he knew she might leave at any time. He was just such a good, honorable man. I also liked that Matilda tried to protect her father and Duncan from the trouble she was in, even though that might have meant she would have to leave Duncan. I was glad, though, when she realized that Duncan and his family would help her with her problem, and that she didn't have to run again. The romance between Duncan and Matilda was sweet, and their conversations were sometimes quite funny. I thought they were really good together. I also liked that Duncan's family completely supported his romance with Matilda. My only complaint about this book was that it seemed a bit unnecessarily wordy, and also a bit too long. Some of the detail of the plot could have been left out, and the story would not have suffered. My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Another wonderful book from Ms. Burrowes
I can’t remember what the first book was that I read by Ms. Burrows. I just knew I had found another “MustBuy” author. Her books have interesting characters, intriguing plots and are so well written. This novel has misdirections, misconceptions with twists and turns. Our heroine is a young, widowed Duchess, who is running away from her father’s house, barely surviving as she has to keep hidden. She interrupts a robbery of a gentleman, and helps him chase off the robbers. He insists she stay the night at his home. He is in the midst of trying to write a book, and needs a secretary. They come to an agreement that she will assist him with his memoirs and he will give her shelter and payment for her assistance. Their relationship develops as respect, attraction and their mutual interests bring them close. But all is not well, as the forces that made her flee, are still looking for her and threaten not only their love, but many lives, as well.

Quirky characters, great romance, excellent historical!
I always read a few of both the good and the less than flattering reviews on books, and found it interesting that some readers found the hero of this story, Duncan, boring. It made me wonder when total honorability and integrity, keen intelligence, wit, and caring kindness became boring. Duncan is one of my favorite heroes ever! I also found the heroine, Matilda, to be equally intelligent, ethical, and loving. Grace Burrowes always entertains. I love her quirky characters and her great stories. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

I LOVE Duncan! Hot brainiacs are the best!
I loved the exchanges between Duncan and Matilda; their intellectual to sensual conversations translated well to their intimate scenes. With Duncan, there is definitely something to be said about the 'quiet, unassuming ones'... While I don't play chess (too dumb), I liked the references to the actual game and the chess-like moves the characters made throughout the story. The writing style, dry wit, and twisty plot turns are why I love Grace Burrowes books!

RIGHT ON THE EDGE OF WONDERFUL FOR ME
This is the second book in a series. It is easy to follow the action and the history. That is not a problem I had. It seemed to drag. The first book was fun and I read it quickly. I enjoyed it very much. This book had very slow spots. Duncan is cousin to a duke and he has been tasked with overseeing an estate belonging to the duke. While walking in the woods, he finds two poachers. They threaten his life and are willing to kill him in order to avoid being turned over to the magistrate. Then suddenly, a woman appears, Matilda. She has a gun and she saves Duncan’s life. That sounds exciting doesn’t it? But, after that it generally becomes slow moving and tiresome. Matilda and Duncan are interesting characters. So are all the secondary characters. I liked both Matilda and Duncan, but even they were sort of dull at times. Too many pages devoted to who they were in the past. There is a mystery. There is possible treason. There is danger. But, it was hard for me to focus. It was just slow. I am giving it 3 stars because Ms Burrowes writes wonderful stories. And this was on the edge of wonderful for me.

Fabulous Book--Intriguing Story
I absolutely loved this tale, though I have to say that the Rogues to Riches series has kept me riveted, from the novella at the beginning of the series to this wonderful tale. The beginning was original and compelling, and the entire book reminded me of peeling an onion--sans the tears, although those appeared at least once while reading this tale. The intrigue just kept on coming. This book shows Grace Burrowes at her stellar best. She never fails to deliver a charming tale, though the Rogues to Riches series in total shows an entirely new level of her skill. I've put every single book, novella, and short story on pre-order over the years and I'll just keep on . . . keeping on! Thank you so much for the pleasure, Grace!
