Pobjoy Mint is delighted to announce the release of a coin which commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the First Man on the Moon which includes the official NASA logo, special permission has been granted by the National Aeronautics & Space Administration in the USA.

The design recreates this momentous occasion featuring an astronaut standing on the surface of the moon whilst saluting. The American flag & the Eagle lunar module can be seen in the background. Earth can be seen in the distance showing the continents of North & South America. This view of Earth replicates the image shown on the medal which accompanied the astronauts on their historic mission. The NASA logo is also shown.

With its direct link to the Apollo 11 Mission, it is particularly apt that this coin is being released on behalf of the Government of Ascension Island. Devil’s Ashpit on the eastern side of Ascension Island made a perfect site to build a NASA tracking station. With volcanic peaks surrounding the site, it provided a natural shield against radar & other interference from elsewhere on the island.

Due to the difficulty of striking Titanium coins & the fact that Titanium reacts differently with every strike, each coin is technically different from all others. There is also a lined effect that is present on the coins which is unique to this metal.

Apollo 11 launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on 16th July 1969 & landed on the moon four days later on 20th July. Having touched down on the moon’s Sea of Tranquility, the Space Center in Houston was notified with the historic words “The Eagle has landed.” Six hours after landing Neil Armstrong took his first steps on the lunar surface making the infamous statement “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. The planting of the US Flag on the surface of the moon marked the US victory of the “Space Race” between the United States & the Soviet Union which had begun in 1955.
