Update!! 05/21/2020. Rod broke. I like the rod a lot but unfortunately it broke yesterday. I used the rod briefly on about five occasions. I went fishing yesterday and the rod snapped under the second guide/blank after I pulled out a Crappie which weighted maybe one pound. I was stunned when I saw it, rod snapped so easily, I didn't even notice it immediately. Too bad, waisted money on a rod I expected would last for a while. This is the first rod ever that broke while fishing, never happened to me before. _------------------------------- So it took me about a year to buy this one. I have several other rods but I wanted this one just to have it in the car and ready to go when I need it. I also like to take a telescopic rod if I'm going for a walk with the family, fits nicely in a stroller or a backpack. Rod is awesome, very light weight and easy to set up. I got the 7.1 ft MH one and it's been great so far. Very well made and pretty sensitive, craftsmanship is great with one small exception. This is the second KastKing rod I got and they both have a small blemish spot on the rod itself. I don't know, if this is a spot where they finish the coating or something but it's there. It's not a problem, just pointing it out. I can't find any flaws so far. I spend two days fishing with telescopic one and it's holding up excellent, takes me less than a minute to get it ready for fishing and even less time to collapse it. Rod came extremely well packaged in a hard cardboard box and the tip was secured. Rod has a plastic sleeve protector to protect the guide and the tip, it would be exceptional if it came with a sleeve or somekind of a bga to put th entire rod inside of it. Rod works well for me and I'm glad I got it.. Good deal!

Took this rod out fishing today and was really pleased! I paired it with an Abu Garcia Max Pro casting reel, 30lb power pro braid and a 6ft 20lb Japanese fluorocarbon leader. And the setup felt perfectly balanced. The rod casts smoothly with no backlashes — I think the smooth line guides and the rod’s responsive action played a big role in that. It handles a wide range of lure weights with ease and has a really solid feel overall. I’m able to cast ultralight lures and heavier ones quite far. On top of that, it looks great and feels well-made much better than my previous telescoping rods at similar prices. Excited to take this out whenever I travel!

Update: Performed great, until it broke at the tip on the first trip. Had a blast casting with this from shore as the extra foot made a nice difference vs my other travel rods, however the fiberglass tip near end splintered at some point (didn't actually catch anything so not sure how this happened--reading the other reviews it seems like maybe this is just a flaw in the manufacturing or design). Hoping KastKing can improve on this as all of their other products have really been stellar in my experience. Note: Haven't had the chance to try it out on the water yet, but will add to this review when I do. Much nicer quality than the other travel rods you typically see here on Amazon from the likes of Plusinno or other manufacturers like that. I would expect as much, as KastKing has delivered a ton of value to my fishing and my son's. We're big fans of their reels and fishing accessories as they're always a good price and perform well--we'll try anything they make. This is out first rod from them. Nice lightweight graphite feel and EVA handle pieces are well positioned and sized. Reel seat can get nice and tight and doesn't slip. The eyelets are bigger and look more high quality (stainless?) than my other travel rods and the guard they provide to protect them during travel feels robust. Only concern, that I have yet to vet, is that because this is longer than your typical 6'6" rod (I got the 7'0"), it may not fit as well in a suitcase or in a rod holder on a backpack. You can see in my photo that when setup, the real will set above the buckle on my KastKing sling back, wheres with a more compact travel rod the reel would sit secured between the buckle and the rod pocket. Not a deal breaker, but need to make sure it stays put if carried at an angle or take the reel off for longer hikes to the water. All that said, the longer length does means longer casting so the travel issues might be well worth it. Will be beach fishing with this in May and can't wait to try it out!

The last 2.5 feet is very flexible especially with the glass tip section. With the the fast action the rod is still very sensitive so you should feel or see the tip flex for even a small trout on the line. Also, with the last 2-2.5 feet being so responsive even a 1/4 oz crank bait lure should remain very active while trolling. The eight guides versus 5-6 on most telescoping rods is a big plus and keeps the line tension well spaced when the rod is bent over fighting a larger fish. The guides are good quality stainless steel with nice finished bindings attaching them onto the rod. KastKing makes over a dozen other speed/power rated spinning rods but there are only limited choices currently available. KastKing is made in China but seems to be a very good low dollar option. I have/had two telescoping KastKing rods for several years but just recently broke one through carelessness, not from fishing. I just bought/received two of these and set them up. I use Shimano reels and they seat nicely/snugly on these rods. Only one negative, a telescoping rod should have a screw on butt cap that can be removed to drain water from inside the barrel if ever dropped into the water (my previous KastKing rods do). These do not, so draining would require collapsing the rod and holding the tip down, which is probably not a big issue. Also, I have not yet float tested this rod with a reel to see if they float or sink, but if like my other KastKing rods they will sink. I use a fishing rod float (like a very small pool noodle) attached to the first telescoping section. I've never dropped a rod and reel over the side but always better to be safe than sorry when out in a yak. Much better quality than any other telescoping rod I have bought, and because I prefer telescoping to single piece or multiple section rods I have bought many other brands. I just love the compactness for packing in to a remote lake or easy stowing in a kayak's confined space. Plus I can retract the rod and still leave line, swivel, lure in place for a fast setup later. I think these are worth every bit the $50 price tag and use them for fresh water lake kayak fishing where I fish for mostly trout but sometimes bass, perch or kokanee. I will also be looking to buy a telescoping Fast/M-L (medium-light) rod when they are available. Any day when you get to wet a hook is a good day!

I was impressed with the craftsmanship of my first Kastking telescopic so I bought 2 more in different sizes. Second time out with this rod I had a Corbina on the line, played it as I always do using drag on the reel but the rod snapped in two places. This is listed as a medium inshore rod yet it couldn’t handle a 2.5 lb fish in calm water? I’ve fished all my life and never broke a rod landing a fish. I have to assume there were defects on this particular rod for it to break under such a small load. I’m hoping Kastking will stand behind their product, and repair or replace my defective rod. Otherwise, the rod casts well, is light and very portable, and seems to be well made.

This is my impression of the BlackHawk II Baitcasting Rod - 7' MH FA Right out of the box - a literal box!... this is a big deal to me only because I have had experience with other rods, even other collapsible ones, that just come with a flimsy bag and no other secured packaging. This made me feel like I'm getting something legit! Besides working my way thru the labyrinth of shrink-wrap holding the rod VERY securely together, I was impressed to find that the quality of the rod is surprisingly good... Though I'm somewhat disappointed in the lack of perceived carbon fiber, unlike similar products. When fully extended, the rod feels sturdy with a good action and decent weight distribution, though a little heavier than some of my other carbon fiber rods, it feels stable and I don't feel worried that this thing is going to break apart. The cap at the end of the rod protecting the guides is actually really appreciated, along with the attached guide to keep them all together on the same side. It feels like a good quality hard plastic that I'm sure will protect from most minor things you can throw at it... though I'm not tempted to experiment with that! My only qualm is you need to place a loose piece of provided foam inside the cap to keep things from juggling around too much. I'm sure it would be fine without it, but the foam keeps the clanking sound to a minimum. The reel seat was smooth as butter and fit perfectly with my Abu Garcia Pro Max 3... the color scheme couldn't be more on point! Overall - I think for the price, if you're looking for a reliable quality collapsible baitcasting rod, this is probably as good as you can get. I've looked around! Again my only qualm might be the weight... I'm not entirely sure what the composition of the whole rod is, since it seems to be some sort of plastic, or at least matted black on top. But, I think carbon fiber construction (if it is already, apologies) would have been worth an extra $10 just to have that extra weight reduction and confidence in build strength. ** I will put a PART 2 to this review after my first use!

I was a huge proponent for Kast King when they first hit the market. They had quality gear that held up at a great price point. They've clearly gone the route of the "tech bros" and cut costs in favor of profits. I know they've always been a Chinese manufactured product, but the reality is, there are great things that come out of China. There's also a lot of terrible things that are the result of lazy manufacturing and/or design. Telescopic rods are designed to be traveled with, so to my surprise when traveling with the rod I bought, the tip snapped off when it had the slightest of pressure on it while I was moving it and it rolled off the table onto a chair cushion, which was about 8 inches down. I get that it rolled off the table, but the fact that it broke that easily, before I was even able to use it, tells me it's a garbage product. It's clear that Kast King has given up on quality products in the name of profit, and after many years of being a fan and supporter of theirs, I'll be moving back to trusted and reliable brands that don't manufacture complete crap.
