Take It Like a Man: The Autobiography of Boy George
C**D
A Riveting Read
Am about the same age as Boy, and was not a big fan of his in the 80's--thought the plaits and makeup were all a bit contrived. Boy, oh Boy was I wrong. Somehow I stumbled into this book and once I started, could not put it down. His difficult working class Irish roots, crazy and sometimes violent family, and fascinating entry as a teen into London's street and club culture. Meteoric rise to fame with the Culture Club and humbling crash coinciding with the ravages of heroin addiction. That part was so sad and difficult to read but gives this reader new insights into how and why celebrities become addicted and how easy and arbitrary death by overdose can be. The Boy is a complex guy -- he is wickedly funny, sensitive, eloquent, brilliant, but also violent, selfish and of course self destructive. The book leaves off when he is in his 30's. We know he has had serious problems with drugs since then. He seems to be in a good place now, and I hope the better angels of his nature are able to win for good.

vivid account of a colorful man
Where do I even start with this one? I've admired Boy George for years, not only for his songwriting and singing, but also for his articulate, funny and profound views on life. The story is wonderfully detailed, and peppered with George's penchant for humorous plays on words and piercing one-liners. It's a very introspective and honest account of his life up to his early 30s. To be honest, it's a little hard to believe someone actually lived everything that happened in this book, so I'm sure it's much easier for us to read than it was for him to live it. Even so, he tells the story to make it feel like you are there with him, and also somehow remains someone you feel that you, too, can relate to, even in his most outrageous outfits, fantastic successes and even personal lows.Sure, Boy George has had many very public destructive events in his life, especially ones that have happened since the publication of this book, but it's nice to see that he seems to be in a much happier period in his life now, drug-free, healthy and happy. I always will admire him for his honesty, being true to himself and who he is.

Boy George is Inspirational
I loved this book! Very honest about his achievements and his failures! I didn’t really know much about him. This helped a lot in understanding why he turned out to be the person he is today! Recommend it to anybody who wants to know more about Boy George and what values he has, because he is a remarkable person.

A fascinating account
I found this biography fascinating. It has a detailed and conversational style that frequently goes on a bit long, but I loved it. I read this to learn George’s story, and that’s what the book delivered. I just wish I could have kept better track of all of George’s friends! (Not to mention all the different names for drugs - I still have no idea which is exactly which.)With anecdotes ranging from heart-wrenching to hilarious, George recounts the raw details of his life - the turning points and moments of influence. Nothing is sugarcoated or glorified - his stories are told in honest and unembellished detail. (And are often intended for mature audiences.) It is really quite a journey.A truly fascinating account; I really enjoyed hearing George’s unique story and perspectives and thank him and Mr. Bright for sharing them with us.

A compelling account of the London punk and glam scene
I was prompted to buy this book after seeing the movie "Worried about the Boy." Douglas Booth was so convincing, I had to look up Boy George online to remember *exactly* what he looked like. Anyhow, I had no idea just how much I was going to be drawn into the subject matter presented by this book. George paints such a clear picture of those times in the London of the late seventies and early eighties, that if you have any interest in that period of music and culture, you can't allow yourself to miss out on this book.Of course any junkie's autobiography is going to have it's downsides, but Gorge never loses his sense of humor about himself. His eloquence, frankness, and intelligence shine throughout the book. And of course it's no spoiler to say that the book has a happy ending. It's great to see such a fine soul come back to life.

Riveting.
Loved the openness & emotion of Boy George. Much better understanding of the gay community. So glad he was able to overcome his addictions. What an angelic face & voice!

I'm a fan, but honestly you don't need to be to enjoy this look into the 80s club/pop/punk/gay/fashion I could go on,scene. I could not put it down. Just wish I could have been part of George's crew.

GREAT READ!
I have loved Boy George since Culture Club became famous in the 1980's. This shows a side of George that shows he is thoughtful, intelligent, and witty. I loved honesty in this book during his good times and bad times. I really understood how fame affected him and isolated him and that is an interesting insight to the negative aspects of fame. I had trouble putting this book down as it is so engaging.

Riveting read...
This is a raw, honest and eye opening autobiography by the man himself. Couldn’t put it down and read it back to back twice before moving onto something else.. (his other book!)
