Q: Can this knife pierce oak wood and what is the substance made out of, steel?

The knife is stainless, and with a near-perfect throw spinning /with/ the grain of an oak board, might stick fast. I would suggest throwing at a softer target, or ideally at log cross-sections. If you are throwing at oak log cross-sections (disks made by cutting an oak log twice through 3-4 inches apart), then you would be fine with these. They are not ideal for sticking in hard targets, however. 12-inch, heavier knives like the Expendables replicas available on Amazon are better for hard wood practice. Remember that a throwing knife is not meant for hard targets. The device just doesn't work well that way. These small knives are plenty durable for me so far, though. Just try not to hit any stone or concrete, and make sure you are throwing with good pace.
