DOVO Silver Shavette Satin Finish Straight Razor Set

Effective and easy to use
Pairs great with my Henson razor. I use the straight edge for edging the beard, and the Henson for safely clearing off large areas of head, neck, and facial hair

Noice
This is a really good choice if you want to get into the freaky subculture of straight-razor shaving. I mean, what kind of guy uses a single, naked sharp blade on his throat and face in this era of space-age 30-blade cartridge razors that will walk your dog for you? The kind of guy who doesn't want to get a second mortgage to buy razor blades and summon his often subdued bada$$ery, because, why not?If you've had a lot of practice with a DE razor, you won't have any problems with this razor, and you can still use all those DE blades you've been stockpiling for the last year or so. You just have to be a little more patient and slow, but you've already got the blade angle down, so there's nothing to it. It does shave even closer than the DE, I think. I swap back and forth between my Merkur Barber Pole and this razor. Now, if you want to jump from the Mach-5 or whatever they're called these days, you might want to rethink that decision or get a DE to practice with for a while. If you don't have blade angle and technique down, you're going to open up an artery and ruin your wife's monogrammed towels. Just sayin'. This is both an art and a skill that you don't learn overnight. But, if you want to save a lot of money and get an amazing shave, this is a good option. It might be a step toward getting really hardcore and entering the world of the traditional straight razor, which is a whole new level of manliness that I won't be getting to anytime soon.

A beginner's journey into straight razor shaving
This is my first foray into straight blade shaving, coming from a Merkur safety razor. I had gotten pretty good with the safety razor and looking to step up my game. I only got interested, because I found a great new barber and have been enjoying the closeness of a straight razor shave when I go in for my monthly haircut.I did a lot of research in determining how to make the jump into straight razor shaving. I didn't want the requirements of stropping before shaving while still learning technique, so I elected for this Dovo which will accept a full length replaceable blade, or a double edge blade broken in half.Out of the bag, I've been using the full size blade. Three days in, I've nicked myself twice, very minor, so I think I'm doing pretty well. I think that I will change to the double edge blade broken in half, making use of the red insert (do directions, had to research to find out that's what the red insert is used for). I have a full beard, so shaving for me is making a distinct cut off on the top edge and then doing the same on the neck line. For this reason, I think that the half blade makes more sense, and I will change to that after a couple more shaves when the full size blade is dulled. I've found myself using the tip frequently based on the shaving cream removal so far. I have a relatively skinny face also so the contours are more in line with a smaller surface. My one complaint is the overall quality of the unit, somewhat shocking for a piece made in Germany. Mine doesn't close without bending it to fit back into the handle. It's very light, so you do actually need to use the slightest amount of pressure instead of the weight of the unit which isn't necessarily the best for a beginner. I've also found it to be kind of slippery, again probably has to do with the weighting.FWIW, I've been most successful in shaving in the shower. When I tried it over the sink for whatever reason, it took me much more time. And then using hot towels to soften your hair, got water all over the place. And if you're looking to venture into the world of straight razor shaving, of course watch your videos on the how-to's. What I didn't expect though in watching and reading is all the skin care procedures that I wasn't doing. I ended up spending more money on toner, non-alcohol based after shave, beard comb, conditioner, just all stuff that I was letting go by the wayside before.Three shaves in, my shave closeness has already exceeded my safety razor experience. I think a lot of that comes from the prep work which I was already doing.

It's a working shavette, worth trying.
I won't make this a review about wet-shaving. If you're looking into this item then you should already know that much.I will instead make a few points.1) This is the best quality shavette that I have used or seen used. I compared it to most other offerings on the market, and the fit/finish here is just better.2) it takes blades other than normal DE blades, but you do have to buy inserts and the other blades are hard to find so I've never tried it.3) I used this every other day or so for 2 years, and never had any issues. I changed blades every couple shaves, and have yet to notice any fatigue in the plastic blade holder.I do have a couple issues though:1) These are very light weight, so you will get a bit more "bounce" which causes more irritation. This seems to be normal for shavettes.2) The way that the blade is held means that getting a less aggressive angle on the blade can be difficult. I wish the plastic would taper down rather than being rounded.

Excellent Tool
As much as I want to love and shave with straight blade razors (I own several), the contours, creases and every-which-way growth on my neck (and I'm sure my skill level) don't allow it to be a real option for me, although the shorter blade of the shavette makes it easier than the standard cut-throat razor. What I do love about this is that it allows precise control (down to the individual hair) for shaving and trimming around my mustache and goatee. Whether you use a DE or one of the multi blade razors (I find the DE gives a far superior shave) they don't make it easy to maintain a precise line. I use this every couple of days to shave those pesky little hairs that make your facial hair line look messy. The compact size and short blade length make it very easy to control no matter what angle you need and, since you can see the cutting edge, it eliminates the problem of going too far with your shaving razor. Stainless construction make it trouble-free to clean and maintain.

The media could not be loaded.
