1,000 Artist Trading Cards: Innovative and Inspired Mixed Media ATCs

Excellent source of inspiration and a good way to encourage budding artists
Artist trading cards have many advantages. They are relatively small and allow viewers to see artwork in a mini size. As such, they are portable and easily carried, displayed and traded. My kids were fascinated by the idea (they were already into trading cards of various sorts) and this served as a springboard for their own artistic creations. It did the same for me. I'd also suggest a look at these related titles: Artist Trading Card Workshop: Create, Collect, Swap Rubber Stamping Artist Trading Cards Paper Mache Artist Trading Cards 6Pk-3.5''X2.5''

Disappointed
This book had 5 pages of info. All the other pages were submitted photos. It is a thick book so...

Warning! Subjective reviewer!
I love this book because my card is in there...what more can I say? Well, sitting alongside some of the most amazing Textile artists ever is awesome and the book itself is visual eye candy. The book leaves no excuses for you not to create ATC's till your fingers blister, explore your creativity and have some beautiful pieces of artwork you could apply to personalised cards turn into other textile pieces. That would have finished the book nicely, I feel, some idea of what to do with the stack of ATC's that start arriving in the post...?

Misleading description
I'm repeating what other reviewers wrote--and I wish I'd read them before I bought this. I have two other books from the "1,000" series, so I was really looking forward to this one. The other two (creative reuse and jewelry) are great sources of inspiration, filled with a variety of beautiful items. Variety is key word here.I made my first ATCs years ago and I've used many different materials: paper, cardboard from food packages, duct tape, wood, metal, screening, craft foam and fabric. The jewelry book, in particular, demonstrates how many wonderful creations can result from looking beyond traditional materials. This ATC book consists of, as others have mentioned, mostly fabric ATCs, the majority of them made with a sewing machine. If you're a textile artist, you'll probably enjoy this book; but if--like me--you're looking a variety of ATCs, you'll be disappointed. The publisher's description (I assume the description came from the publisher) should have made it clear that the emphasis was on fabric "mixed media". If I'd looked at the book's cover and seen that the editor of the book is the editor of "Quilting Arts" and "Cloth Paper Scissors" magazines, that might have given me a clue...I ordered this book, however, with the expectation that it would be as full of innovation as the two previously mentioned books. It's not.

Lots of pictures of stitched cards
I like the book but didn't realize there was so little text and that the main focus is stitched cards. While i enjoy stitched/ fabric cards they are not my most favorite style for ATCs so i wish there were more styles of mixed media represented or that the title reflected the emphasis on stitchery. That said, there is an abundance of inspiration for atcs in this book. Nice pictures!

Another ATC must-have
If you love artist trading cards, you'll want this collection. Instruction on various techiques is also given, although it's not always very clear.I found myself dog-earing many pages, since I want to go back and try the technique shown. There are a few too many fabric ATCs for my taste, but apart from that it's all good.

Mini Quilts not ATC's
It seems like the ATC's in this book were 95% fabric, whereas most ATCs usually seem to be paper 95% of the time. The pictures are pretty but the cards are more like mini quilts than ATC's. They were beautiful, but not what I was looking for.I was a little dissapointed to find that every now and then there would be a group of 5 where only one thing (like the color of a hat) was different, but still concidered 5/1000; I felt a little cheated because of this.I would suggest the "1000 Artist's Journal Pages" if your looking for inspiration rather than this "1000 ATC's."

This Book Really Falls Short!
I have several other 1000 series books (journal pages, artists' books) and they have been a wonderful source of inspiration for me. I especially enjoy the diversity of styles/designs these books generally represent within a category of art. Not so with this book! I've been making ATCs for many years and was looking for some new ideas. Unfortunately, the vast majority of cards in this book are fabric, and although I do sew, I am not interested in making fabric trading cards. I was greatly disappointed by the lack of variety and true 'mixed media' covered here and feel the book is a poor representation of what is out there in the trading card world. My experience has been that the majority of cards are paper-based, with collage, stamping, or hand-illustration, with only a small subset of cards being textile-based. As others have said, the title and description are very misleading, especially for those familiar with the quality of the other books in this series.

Just what I needed
I liked this book because it had a lot to look at and the ideas could be adapted for my own use. I would recommend this book to friends .

Inspiring
Never having heard of ATCs before, I borrowed this book from the library first, before ordering it through Amazon, just to find out what all the fuss was about. Being a textile artist in the making, but never quite getting round to quitting my boring day job and immersing myself in a more creative role, I found this book to be pure inspiration. It is true that there is very little text, there are no instructions on how to create these little gems, but that to me is part of the book's appeal. It simply provides the inspiration, shows you what can be done and lets the artist's imagination and expertise create the work of art.It surprised me that there is so much in this book to interest textile artists. Although in the book much of the work on the ATCs involve the use of collage and, basically, scrapbooking techniques, there are no tedious "how to" instructions given and so the designs can be adapted or used simply for inspiration. It is obviously a book which inspires more than it informs, but perhaps at the end of the day this book does both of those things.

I am disappointed by This book
I am disappointed by This book. The summary should mention that the book is only about Fabrice ATC. In addition to that, all the "basic technics information" are included in pages 8 to 25 only. The balance of the book, up to p. 320, are only a gallery of different artists. It is probably a good book for fabrics artist, but certainly Not what I expected with the description.

J'adore

Love!!!
I love this book! So many great ideas - it's one you'll want to go through again and again - just for pleasure or to spark your own creativity. There is also "How-to" section at the beginning of the book to help you get started - it lists materials needed, etc.
