Excellent chisels - all were damaged, though
These are definitely five star chisels. I was going to deduct a star because all three chisels arrived with damage to the left corner of the cutting edge; like they had been dropped on concrete and that corner hit first. I have been wood working for 40 years, so I know that chisels need to be carefully sharpened. And even new ones are likely to need honing at least. I am really careful with my chisels because cleaning up damage like this takes a lot of time. I don't think the damage occurred in shipping; the packing materials were not cut or damaged. Anyway, these chisels are worth it, even if you have to clean them up when first received. Once I reground one of them and honed and polished the grind, it was amazing. cuts oak like butter.

Good chisels for the money
I was impressed with the quality...contrary to some other reviews. Most impressed with the quality of the steel. I did a quick touch up of the edge on a diamond plate to even out the edge before getting to work. They really hold an edge even on hardwoods with some aggressive pounding. Highly recommended.

Good Deal for the Money
I wanted some fairly nice Japanese chisels for dovetails. I have to say these are OK for the money but your going to have to sharpened them if you really want them to perform. Out of the bag, I sharpen them all to 25 degrees using whetstones at 600 grit, 1000 grit, 1200 grit 4000 grit with double bevel at plus 2 degrees. I finish honing on a leather strop with compound. You want $400 Japanese chisels you can buy them but with a little work, these a just fine.

Handle finish sucks but the blade is nice
they come mostly sharp but I would suggest running them on a hone or a strop a few times to deburr them. The bottom is concave in the traditional way. The handle finish has some thing to be desired so I sanded it off and removed the sticker and refinished. Not their fault but somehow I was under the impression that these came in a box... they dont.

These have held their edge well.
I was concerned after reading other reviews that the edge would not hold up. After receiving these I honed them on diamond stones and strop. I used them to build a Japanese style toolbox from white oak. They are holding up well and I would recommend these as a good value.

Solid value
Great tools for the price tag in my opinion.. definitely needed some work to flatten and hone but nothing more than expected.. seem thus far to hold a nice edge and feel good in the hand..

Labeling fell off and were just stickers
They were defined sharp out of the box and have done fine. For the price it is ok but I was expecting more care in the handle

While they are still better than any similar priced western chisel set, I was appalled by their finish. The chisels seem to be a single steel set, so no hardened steel bottom layer. Also - and this is my biggest gripe with them - they were sharpened lopsided, so the widest chisel, in my case, was crooked. As far as Japanese chisels go, this must be the worst set I have ever bought, and I own many hand forged Nomi. Given their price point, I’d still pick them over western chisels, but in the wide gamma of Japanese chisels, I would say this set would serve best as a prop in a theater production about a Japanese carpenter. For very little more you could have two steel layered chisels that have been finished with care.

They look a whole lot bigger in the picture then they actually are. I used them once and they are extremely sharp and very effective. . I’m satisfied
