Dinner PAWsible: A Cookbook of Nutritious, Homemade Meals for Cats and Dogs

Avid cooks only
My issue with this book is that you have to have the income of a veterinarian to buy the ingredients. Asparagus, oysters, shrimp, duck, salmon especially for the cats but even in half the dog recipes. Because of the need to balance nutrients you can not safely substitute ingredients within a recipe which further cuts back on the number of useable recipes when an animal is allergic to an ingredient (milk, wheat, eggs, etc) . I also was hoping for more in bulk recipes that could be frozen. Yes, you can multiply these but be aware these are big complicated recipes. If you don't love to cook and have a lot of time to spend doing it, this book is not for you.

Why include an ingredient considered toxic for cats and dogs?
Some nice recipes and a good general guideline, but why include parsley, a substance considered toxic to cats and dogs according to the ASPCA, in these recipes? Surely a safer green vegetable or herb could have been used to add the desired vitamins/minerals/fiber... Also, way too many fishy recipes for cats... You preach variety in your book, but if your cats are sensitive to fish, it only leaves a few good recipes. Not to mention, fish is supposedly not good for cats! A disappointing purchase.

Dog loves recipes
My dog loves this food! Her liver numbers went from over 1,000 to134 in two months on this food. All her blood work now comes back perfect and she really loves the recipes. I think its saving money, her previous food was very expensive. I use an Instant Pot to make a 2 day supply, really easy.

Heaven Sent
Have to give this cookbook five stars. It is well researched and well written. In my opinion, there is nothing else out there for pet owners that even approaches the quality of this work. It stands alone! Now I know why my pooch Boris has had diarrhea, an itchy behind, fidgeted after meals, vomited, slept poorly and was listless. After trying and rejecting brand after brand of so-called ultra-high quality dog foods, and finally settling for the one that bothered Boris the least, I discovered Thixton's website (via the documentary, Dog Fooled), and bought this book. I already know Boris loves human food. Now he gets to have it everyday. This cookbook makes it all possible, and I don't have to worry anymore that his kidneys/liver are being damaged by chemicals and diseases meat scraps. Thank you!

Don't bother. Disappointing Recipes
Not a fan of these recipes. Many use lots of legumes and peas which has been linked to taurine deficiencies in goldens (causing death) and just seems like a bad idea in homemade dog food.

Daily servings, conversion nightmares and changes, lack of consistency
They seem like really good recipes but they are marked out for daily servings. I know there is a equation for figuring it out in bulk, but it doesn't really give much if you want to do this in bulk. A recipe called to be made in a slow cooker with 4 cups of water and with the conversion I had to make it bulk that's 28 cups of water, how is that going to work? Another example for the problem with bulk example if you make it in bulk how much you should serve to your animal in a single feeding. I wish they had recipes in bulk as well as daily servings. The conversions for ingredients are all over the place. Like for example some of the recipes that have liver in them change from a measurements in tablespoons to a measurement of ounces. Why?? Couldn't you just keep it the same measurement through out the book? For the calcium supplements milligram measurement I had to go to a website to see how much was in a teaspoon and it did the conversions for me, I feel a measurement could have been added if you get a powdered for or make a table for that somewhere, if you can do the egg shell measurement why couldn't you do the calcium?Lastly their ingredient list was inconsistent and vague. Sometimes it just said chicken or beef, ok like what kind of chicken or beef? You were specific in other recipes, be consistent. Sometimes I felt they recipes were too vague about what you need to do.Honestly, I still want to try it out because some of the recipes do look good, but the book leaves me a bit frustrated and annoyed with how they put it together.

I cook these recipes in quantity and my dogs thrive
I have loved using this book to cook for my dogs for about two years. Now, I also use it to cook for my cats! I buy meat, vegetables, and rice at Costco and I make 20-40 of each recipe at a time and freeze it in large tubs. When it’s time to serve the food, I warm it first in a skillet so that it smells good! The cost is not prohibitive because I buy in bulk and supply the labor. I think the variety of ingredients prevent food sensitivities by not over-feeding one protein all the time. I often substitute lamb for beef and the dogs love it. I use a large pressure cooker, crock pot, and food processor and the works goes pretty quickly. My dogs never, ever turn down this food like they do commercial food and there is never a recall concern. Thank you for providing my dogs a healthy diet with sufficient variety that they aren’t bored.

Good Source
I have found this book very useful. I was initially drawn to it via Susan Thixton's website. The book is easy to follow. My dog definitely enjoys the food. The reason for 4 stars and the only drawback for me so far is the conversion table. The recipes are written in dry measures. The chart converts the measures to weights which is confusing to me. A cup of beef does not weigh the same as a cup of peas. I have measured and then weighed the common ingredients and keep my own chart.

This book is brilliant. I have already made quite a few meals for my dogs. Only made one so far for my car . The all seemed to enjoy the meals. My dogs seem to have more energy and enjoy their meals.

Not nutritionally balanced for cats
I bought this book with the prospect of feeding my cat healthier food, however the recipes do not provide enough nutrition on their own. Double checking ingredients for my cat against the ones used in the recipes showed that few of the ingredients were actually good for cats. I was very disappointed and I can't even give the book away now because I would not want someone to harm their pet unintentionally as I may have had I not done more research...

Happy and healthy cats assert themselves....
My cats love the food. Their coat has become shinier and they have begun to assert themselves because they are healthier and happier and think they can boss me around.
