This is definitely a solid piece. It's cast aluminum, so you don't have to worry about the main parts rusting. I don't know about the hinges and screws and stuff. The wire goes from the damper at the top of the chimney down to the fireplace. You pull on the wire to close the damper. Pulling this damper close takes much more force than I would expect. Maybe 30 lbs of pressure? I would say it's a significant pull for me, and would be very difficult for my wife. You pull the cord a few inches until the metal anchor at the end clears the metal brace(that you install), then you slip that anchor bead into the metal brace. The brace requires you to drill 2 holes into the masonry to attach. There's a silicon gasket at the top that helps seal the damper 90-95%. It's WAY better than the metal flue above my fireplace, but it's not a perfect. I'm totally ok with it though. I'm not going to put a chimney cap on it, so hoping it does well in the rain. When cleaning the chimney, I'll always have to climb to the top and pull the wire out. That's going to be a hassle, but I don't use the fireplace a lot (3-5 times a year), so that might be once every few years.

Out of the box and in use in about 15 minutes. The old damper in our firebox does not move freely, so this was the perfect solution. I used existing hardware in the fireplace to hook the cable when closed, so I cannot comment on installation of the bracket. If the damper is not closed tightly it will collect water that then drops down the chimney when it is opened. When closed tightly, the lid has a slight pitch, which should make the water run off the side. Quality material, sturdy and very sound. It fit perfectly, which was great because I just guessed at the size. I was surprised at the price of these dampers when I started looking. This was the best deal at $225. Well worth it, however, for preventing a draft.

Exactly what I needed for my fireplace. Installation was easy and it was weather tight once installed. One thing you have to be careful of is ensuring the door opened. Had released the cable to open the door but the door was stuck shut. Lit my fire and smoked my house out before realizing it was stuck closed even though my cable was in the open position.. you can hear when it closes and opens tho.

You can see daylight by the bolts holding the hatch on. As a result, the damper leaks air, water, and is overall a terrible damper as a result. Easy to operate, but doesn't keep the elements out when the manufacturing tolerances are so large.
