what the family doctor doesn't tell you
For years I had been told I had osteopenia, that's it, no information regarding managing it or how to prevent osteoporosis. This book has information on supplements like Vitamin D ( important when living in a place where there are lots of cold cloudy days), and calcium/other nutrients. There is lots of good information on foods containing calcium, importance of protein in my diet and habits/medicines/ foods which can cause bone loss.I was impressed with the section on interpreting bone density scans, because on line sources are not very good references for figuring out what all the numbers mean. I bought the book to help me learn how to do whatever I can to prevent further bone loss. I understand the structure of bones better and how all the pieces of exercise and diet fit together to prevent more bone loss. I wish I had started prevention of bone loss 20 years ago but it is not a topic most medical providers talk to their patients about. Great reference for men and women, gives me a good starting place to discuss bone loss prevention with my physical therapist. If you need to take medicine for osteoporosis there is a chapter about them, easy to understand. There is a lot of information in this book, and it is very reasonably priced.

A Decent Overview
This is a decent review of the causes of, treatments for, and adjustments to osteoporosis. Although eating disorders are mentioned very briefly, I would encourage future editions to address this more, as a recent study found 90 percent of adults with anorexia nervosa had low bone density, divided approximately evenly between osteopenia and osteoporosis. Given that an estimated 9 percent of Americans will suffer from an eating disorder in their lifetimes, i 'd venture it's quite reasonable to include more about this risk factor.

Valuable Resource
I had originally borrowed this book from my local library but found there to be so much valuable information that I decided to buy a copy of my own to keep on hand for reference. I especially like the safe exercise and strengthening directions. The thorough details of medical and holistic applications will be useful to refer to as my journey to live with this goes on. I have been diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. The rheumatologist said my negative bone density score are the worse she's ever seen in anyone of any age even though I am only in mid 50's. I am determined to do my best to retain the mobility I have and lessen the pain as much as possible.
