My Teacher Glows in the Dark (3) (My Teacher Books)

I have fond memories of reading this book first in the "My Teacher is an Alien" series, back in the 1990s. Though it comes third in the series, and segues immediately into the sequel and conclusion in the fourth book "My Teacher Flunked the Planet," the book works on its own as well. There's enough exposition to set up the plot, but there's never a sense of just slowing down and letting the protagonists (or the reader) take things in. I know this series is explicitly aimed at younger readers, but it has a true-to-form speculative fiction "big idea," and I wish the author had given it more time to play out.

After reading Coville's first book in the Teacher series, 'My Teacher is an Alien', this book comes up a bit short. The technology in the story is interesting and the science is accurate, and these elements are included should questions by readers arise - questions like, How does this work?, or How do they do that? However, it is a bit presumptuous to assume questions will come up beyond describing what certain aliens look like.Lengthy explanations about food simulators, transporters, language translators and medical procedures do little to advance the story line. Thus, the story drags a bit, at least in the early chapters. Coville is a good writer for the juvenile reader. His vocabulary is age-appropriate and his story lines are intriguing. Some of his books are first rate. This one falls a little short of that mark. My 8 y.o. grandson loved 'My Teacher is an Alien.' This book did not as readily grab or hold his attention.

Read it as a child, read it again to see why I remembered it from around 20 years ago. Fairly illustrative storytelling with a tame vocabulary, really it's the main character's empathetic insight and introspection that sell this book for me.

This book is excellent, I liked the series when I was a kid, reading them to my kids now. BUT...the updated cover illustrations are terrible, makes it seem less serious and more childish than these books really are. And there aren't any interior illustrations, which the original editions have. Just a warning for people who remember.

I loved this book series when I was young, I bought this for my daughter to continue the tradition.

Good read

My son is getting into reading. I loved this series at his age and bought them to share with him.
