Adequate for the cheapest biggest scratcher you can find
So I'm an overly obsessive researcher when it comes to shopping for online products, especially cat stuff. So for a 32 inch squared scratching post, this is the cheapest one on the market, price wise. My cat likes to scratch the felt bottom half more than the top sisal half, so the felt is already tearing away like some other reviewers have commented. I plan to wrap the bottom half myself with sisal and it will be perfect

Our cat's favorite scratching post
Our cat usually has a lukewarm reaction to scratching posts, but he loves this one. He will scratch or attack it several times a day, or climb it and perch on top of it. It's a large post, and the rectangular base takes up a bit of space, but it has saved our new chair which had attracted his attention before the post arrived. We have three different types of scratching posts and this one is far and away his favorite. It's heavy but easy to assemble, and it appears to be quite sturdy. Guster gives it two paws up!Update: It's now about 4 months since we gave Guster his scratching post. He absolutely adores it. It is his "play" spot--when he leads us there, we know he wants to play! He will wear himself out kicking at the base of it and will eventually doze off beside it. We've tried a lot of different scratching posts but none of them ever appealed to him like this one. And yes, he is tearing the material off the bottom half of it, but that's just proof of his love! We plan to buy another one or two for other rooms of the house!

Great scratcher, BUT....
It's a great scratcher, however the 'carpet' is a felt like fabric and it was destroyed in a day. Within the first 10 minutes one of the cats, had pulled some of it up from the wood base. If they had used a more durable fabric or added another sisel part, instead of the gray carpeted bottom, it would be the best scratcher I would have ever purchased. I'll have to fix this myself somehow. This is depressing. Also wanted to note that there are two little play balls attached. One on top and one in a hidden hole in the bottom. Too darn awesome. The base is wide enough: no cats will knock this over - even climbing up it. It's also heavy enough to stay secure, but not too heavy to move. And the packaging is the most effective and most useful use of space of anything I've seen shipped off of this website. Kudos. All in all, it's actually a great scratcher. The felt bottom will get destroyed. But to their credit, the plastic bottom's interior is the same color as the fabric so if you ripped it off, one may not even notice? Either way, it's a keeper and my cats love it. All for under $40.

Good for many reasons
I am happier with this than I thought I would be.It was easy to put together - just be sure to read/follow directions to make it sturdy. I have 2 cats, 11.5 lbs and 10 lbs. They actually can sit on top of this without any trouble of it falling over. It is tall enough that they can reach up and put their head on/over the top. I am happy to report they both scratch it (though one cat seems to have claimed it and tries to chase the other away). Also there is a nice carpeted area at the base where a cat likes to lay down. The price wasn't horrible, especially considering that it is being used. This scratcher is not overly obvious in the room, almost don't see it when it's next to a highback accent chair. I bought this to give the cats something new to scratch so they wouldn't scratch a new piece of furniture. It's been over a week and it's worked so far - new recliner is safe from cat claws!I did apply catnip spray to the carpet of the scratcher to draw cats to it. The attached toys have even been played with a little. The shedding is not bad, actually getting more pieces of cat claws than of carpet. I will definitely buy this again after the cats scratch it too death.

Did not hold up well
Easy to assemble and seemed sturdy at first, however did not hold up well. Our kitten liked to jump and stand on top of the post. One day, the post just snapped off of the base. We screwed the post to a larger solid piece of wood, which helped stabilize. Our kitten also did not like scratching on the jute...he would only use the felt portion. Felt eventually tore off and made the post virtually useless. So, not a great investment.

Cat loves it- I love it
I’ve had my scratching post for over a year now. It holds up really well. My Kitty loves edges and corners. Her talon like claws shred up boxes easily. I searched and hunted for a scratching post that wasn’t round. They are almost all round. Finding this one was a god send. Assembly was very easy. It looks good, and it’s very sturdy for an 11 lbs medium sized cat to stretch and cling to.I now have two of these side by side and kitty uses both and plays around or between them. She likes to shred and destroy the felt like fabric sections before reaching for the rope- I found it easy to replace the material with what I believe to be felt carpet lining for floors and gaffers tape. The rope is still going strong. For this price- it’s a steal. I highly recommend this scratching post to every cat owner.

It broke after a day..
It seems well made AT FIRST. and if you know how to be handy with tools you could take the post fix it onto something else.. but FOR THIS PRICE YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH A BROKEN PRODUCT. my cat only weighs 12 pounds but he is lengthy which is why I needed a bigger and taller scratching post for him to be able to stretch when he scratches. He absolutely loved his new scratcher after i put it together and warmed him up to it. But after a day of him playing with it it became detached from the base.. at first it just wobbled a little (no big deal) then after another day it just completely fell over from the base.... it seems like the base is made of hard pressed cardboard or something.. which is not something I'd deem sturdy enough to handle an adult cat or several cats playing on the thing. SHOULD HAVE BEEN WOOD. which is what I'm considering doing, since the post itself is fine I want to take some screws and try to attach it to a sturdy plank of wood. My cat was so disappointed after it kept falling over and it scared him when he went to use it.
