Blast From Christmas Past--The Variety Shows...Puts You In Festive Mood
My parents and grandparents loved to watch variety shows that were so popular in the 1950s through the 1970s. In this collection, you have three Christmas shows from the 1950s and Kenny Rodgers' "Keep Christmas With You" from 1995. Fred Waring's show (1952) and Liberace's show (1953) are great examples of what television programming was like in its infancy. They are enjoyable to watch and a reminder of simpler times of TV, before computers, iPads and iPhones now dominate our electronic landscape. I recall my mother playing Fred Waring's "Sounds of Christmas" album as a child, so it was interesting to see him perform on TV. My grandmother saw Liberace perform in 1950s; he was as charming in person as he was in his Christmas special. Liberace spotted my grandmother in the audience and came out and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Bob Hope's USO show features many Hollywood stars in their prime; my mother and grandmother were always fond of "Uncle Miltie" and Bing Crosby. Watching these shows brings back fond memories of them. They also made sure to watch Bing Crosby's Christmas specials, also available on Amazon. The picture quality for the 1950s shows are not the best, but still very watchable. This is a budget DVD so don't expect any digitally restored copies from old prints. These four shows will definitely put you in the holiday spirit and are clean, festive fun for the entire family.

Christmas Specials Worth Having
I haven't watched Kenny Rogers yet, but I am very glad that the other Christmas specials were included. Here's my thing about Christmas Specials: Generally, if you watch them sitting down staring at the screen like they were a Hitchcock film, you'll be disappointed. Personally, I like to have them on while doing Christmas related activities: wrapping, decorating, trimming, etc. For that purpose these are very good. I think the Liberace and GE Theater shows were taken from old kinascopes and the USO Show from an old print. The picture quality is not great (not horrid) and the production values are very simple. Still, there's a lot of refreshing earnestness in these old shows. Contrary, to what another reviewer stated, I rather like the Liberace special. His piano playing is top notch and he brings a real goofy enthusiasm to the affair, especially when he introduces his siblings, dog, and mother at the end. For $5, this disk is definitely worth picking up.
