I love this book!!!
If I could give it 6 stars, I would. The cases in this book are so interesting! I love reading it and the pictures, while gorey, are fascinating too! I’m so happy my professor required this book because it was written super well. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to learn more about homicide investigation!

Extremely Interesting
This is essentially a text for homicide investigators. I am not in law enforcement, but I found it extraordinarily interesting, providing great insight into the physical and intellectual disciplines of that field. Not for everyone, of course, but if you are curious about the process of tracking down murderers, this is a very good book.

Some of the information is dated in terms of technology and a good portion of the book is the author referring to himself as an expert and touting his resume, but regarding the guts of an investigation the information and processes are solid. Expect a ton of gory photos.

The Best There Is
I was assigned this text for my forensic science class at Bethany College in Lindsborg Ks. Instead of reselling this book at the end of the semester like many of my other books I have kept it on my coffee table as a talking piece for guests and for reference in the future when I will be doing these things for my job. I love the photos, the explanations, everything about this is a phenomenal book

Not Just For Investigators
I'm a mystery novelist. Most mystery novels involve murder, since that is the most serious crime, creates the most drama, gives the protagonist the biggest goal, etc. With the popularity of shows like CSI, and procedural mystery novels such as Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs, accuracy has become even more important. Readers are less likely to accept "creative license," and are quick to point out if something doesn't make sense. This book, which is used by police academies around the country, including the FBI Academy, is an essential guide to how homicides are investigated, or should be investigated. As a writer of crime novels, I have found this book to be a valuable reference in making sure that the police in my stories, and my private detective protagonist, are "true to life" in how they handle the investigations of murders. For any writer of crime fiction, this book should be on your desk for easy reference at all times--it has a permanent place on my desk.

Upfront and gruesome but required reading for budding homicide detectives
Bought this for my wife who is a true crime nut, I swear if I was ever discovered dead in mysterious circumstances her book shelf would ensure her immediate arrest. This book is apparently the standard text in the USA but it is relevant in the UK too. It is up front, gruesome and detailed, not for the faint hearted. My brother in law is an Inspector of police and he was very taken with it and felt that it should be required reading for all aspiring homicide investigators. Some of the material was very reminiscent of Sydney Smith's early texts on the subject.

This is a wonderfully studious approach to homicide investigation but
I had this book as the Third edition, now its on the Fifth and (from what I've read so far and remembering the Third) appears to have been really well and suitably updated for the 21st Century. This is a wonderfully studious approach to homicide investigation but, as the title suggests, with the really practical elements bought to the fore to emphasize the importance of the practicalities over the theory. All in all this is undoubtedly the definitive guide to homicide investigation by one of the world's foremost authors in the subject. Not for the faint hearted though!
