Great quality for the price
I bought 2 of these to help teach cub scouts how to sharpen pocket knives. They worked well and came with good info about using them properly. My knife is nice and sharp now.

Absolutely fantastic whetstone
I was blown away when I opened the box and saw this whetstone. It is so nice. The quality is that of a much more expensive one. It was packed so nicely and came with easy to follow instructions plus access to a YouTube video. I am experienced in sharpening knives, but watched the video, and it's a good one lso don't hesitate to see it as it won't waste your time. The seller is so nice and personable, she really cares about her customer's and wants them to be happy with her merchandise!! She took the time to send me a personal email and I not only enjoyed that, I really appreciated it!! It's not often anymore that a merchant takes the time to contact me. I highly recommend this whetstone you cannot get it for a better price--believe me, I did my research. It's a very high quality stone and will last many years if taken care of properly. My knives are mega razor sharp now just like I want them to be.

This does the job
First, one small gripe. This is an excellent whetstone and one that will last quite a while. It should come with a box (plastic or wood) that has an opening for the whetstone and a cover. I will not want this quality whetstone to be stored in my workshop subject to dust and debris. So, I have to find (or make) a suitable storage case for it.The whetstone itself is high quality and works beautifully. Surfaces were flat and totally free of any blemishes. Following the directions supplied, I soaked the whetstone for 10 minutes and then placed it on the rubber mat stand. I could tell this was going to be messy to use so I got a 2'x3' heavy plastic sheet and laid that down on the table first. As the whetstone was used, it had a tendency to slide around on the plastic sheet which I fixed by placing an absorbent paper towel underneath the whetstone to provide some friction with the plastic. This worked well.I started sharpening with the 400 grit side and this brought the knife edges back into shape (first outing I did a Chicago Cutlery Chef's Knife, paring knife, 6" knife, and 8 steak knives). The instructions were to press down when drawing the knife away from the edge and lighten up when pushing the knife in the direction of the edge. I did this while also sliding the knife right and left so there would not be any grooves in the knife edge. Turn knife over and repeat. I did this with about 50 strokes on each side. I had a moist sponge next to me so I could put a few drops of water on the stone after each side was sharpened. This gave me a nice slurry from sharpening. When all the blades had been rough sharpened, I then wiped each blade off and repeated everything using the 1000 grit side. About 100 strokes on each blade edge with a lighter pressure than previously used seemed to give very good results. This was followed by a quick pass to remove any burr on the edge. The knives were impressively sharper than when I started. They are perfectly adequate to use for cutting or carving. I was pleased with the results. They were, however, not as sharp as they could be. Next, going to a 3000 grit and possibly following with a 6000 grit and stopping would be needed to bring these blades to their desired state of sharpness. Getting there would be a lot of work and probably not really necessary as the 1000 grit leaves the blades impressively sharp. With the addition of a storage case for this whetstone, I'd give a solid 5 stars. It was an excellent value for the money spent. I would absolutely buy this again if I had it to do over.

Works well
I am a beginner at sharpening knives, but with this stone, it was easy to sharpen my dull knives. It does not slide with or without (I had a towel underneath) the rubber piece. It takes time to sharpen very dull knives, but it is a great product for the money!

It works!
I received the sharpening stone in perfect condition. The packaging was excellent and much more than I expected. I am a complete noob at sharpening knives on a stone, and it took me an hour to get a cheap, dull blade to where I wanted it. Not quite there but very close. Although, I strongly suspected that I already gotten it to where I wanted it during the first ten minutes... then kept messing it up. You have to keep your wrist steady as possible, to the point where you're using your whole body to move the blade rather than your arms. It's true that the rubber mount that comes with this can still slide around when wet, so it takes a bit of work to dry it just right, then it'll be steady.Like everything else, I'm sure it will get easier with practice, and I'm sure I made it more difficult than I had to. YouTube provides some great pointers, but they're all quite variable in the tips and steps they provide to you. However, at least I can say that the cheap, dull blade (that I could never get sharp even with a knife sharpening tool) was successfully made sharp enough to cut through paper. I have another cheap and dull blade I can't wait to practice with. In due time, I'll be able to sharpen any blade in five minutes with this stone.I've made quite a few mistakes. One mistake I made: I kept rinsing off the stone every few minutes, then I read that I wasn't supposed to do that. The "dirty water" that starts forming as you're sharpening is actually GOOD for sharpening your knife. Somehow, it helps with the process, and I have to say that I wonder if I messed up the condition of the stone cuz now there are scuffs that I can't quite rinse off anymore.Another mistake I've made is cleaning this with soap and water. You're not supposed to use any soap or harsh chemical with this product. USE WATER AND BRUSH ONLY!

Great deal.
If you want to simplify, get a sharpening stone. It's meditative and superior to tools. This one really fits the bill. The base is rubber so it sticks to the counter while you are sharpening. The stone has two grit sizes too!Great deal!

Reed the Fish Monger Approved
I got this after watching reed the fish monger do his Dexter sharpening tutorial. This MUST be the “10 dollar” stone he recommends.I have used a lot of stones and this is a great quality. I don’t need to use the 1000 side and the 400 works great. One kitchen knife I finished the “polish” on the green (medium) Spyderco ceramic sharpener and it got it SUPER polished and razor sharp. But with a bit more time on just this stone I could have gotten it pretty close.
