Holy Bible: English Standard Version, Black, Value Pew Bible Hardcover – January 1, 2010

If you want an everyday Bible that is hardback and that does not have a lot of extra stuff in addition to Scripture, this is a good economical choice. The more expensive ESV pew Bible is bigger and the words bleed through the pages (and so I would not prefer it even if it were cheaper). This smaller one does not have transparent pages (the slight downside to this is that the pages are not bright white) and it is the perfect size (i.e., it is not so small that the font is unreadable, but it is small enough that it is not at all cumbersome or intimidating). The only material on the pages other than the text of Scripture are [a] occasional footnotes, mostly having to do with translation variants, [b] the section headings, which are helpful in getting to know one's Bible, and of course [c] the chapter and verse numbers. Get this along with the NASB Study Bible and the ESV Study Bible.

Its smaller (8.5x5.25 inches) than standard just enough so it fits most shelves and purses. But it is inexpensive and durable. The print is average size so if you need large print this is not the book for poor eyesight. ESV is not perfect in its translation but then none are. ESV sings in easy English yet hold the magesty of the NKJ or KJ books. An excellent value for the price! The pages are thicker than I expected for an inexpensive pew bible. Most of the underlining I have done has not bled through to the other side of the page, but I do have two or three pens that will bleed through. And my yellow highlighter marker is barely noticeable on the other side, but the pink bleeds through. The font used in this edition is very readable. The ESV is an excellent translation, faithful to the original texts.

Easy-to-read, lightweight, and unpretentious Bible that gets the job done. I like how I can put it down on a desk like a textbook and it remains stable, and also how one can read it casually on the couch or bed without it being heavy and awkward. It's like the end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: choose the simple Holy Grail.

I just recently got this bible, and so far I like it. I just noticed, for the first time, that this translation is missing the familiar beginning of Proverbs 23:7, "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." I never noticed this peculiarity of this translation, or I may not have gotten it, even though overall I do like it. That said, it is handsomely designed, and seems to be quite sturdy. The cover is a nice vinyl, which seems to be very durable, and though the binding is not sewn, it seems that it is well and carefully glued. Also, the paper is a nice quality, not too thin, and the print is easy to read. And I like the double-column format, as the single-column format looks too modern to me. Finally, the translation is excellent, overall. The English Standard Version is a good translation, as I think it strikes a perfect balance between the archaic language of the King James Version, and the other modern translations. I wanted this bible because I wanted one that didn't have any extra features. Some pew bibles are poorly constructed, but this one may be an exception. So far it seems that it is, and I would recommend it.

I bought the ESV pew bible at the same time I purchased a ESV student study bible because I wanted something smaller than the student version to carry with me to church and other places I go. For what it cost you cannot go wrong with the ESV pew bible. It has a rugged hard cover and I keep it in my wheelchair backback so wherever I go, so does my bible. Of course I prefer to read the student study version but it is simply inconvenient to carry with me. So if you are on a strict budget but would like to enjoy reading the Holy book, I would recommend a copy of the ESV pew bible! It's a great deal om the greatest book in the world.

Got this bible cause I was sick of the overly casual, floppy imitation leather bibles that were full of "study plans" and distracting foot notes. The translation is great... Very easy to understand while at the same time sticking to its timeless sound.. Not too casual. The quality is great. The book is sturdy, font it just right, and the bible looks really nice. GREAT buy!
