Sex Made Simple: Clinical Strategies for Sexual Issues in Therapy
H**R
I think they use this in psychology graduate courses.
This book is a no BS study of the role of sex in a relationship. It's pretty comprehensive, and very professional. It recognizes the variety in different couples' needs, and presents a general model for how sex is an important element to a couple's well being.

Glad someone wrote a book about it
Nice someone wrote a book on sexuality for therapists. As a therapist I deal with the subject a lot and didn't find much new, but would be a good read for new therapists. State boards can invoke a fear of delving into sexuality yet its often a core issue for many clients.

Not made simple at all, without an index
Rather extraordinarily for a text book, this book has no index which makes the book very difficult to navigate and left me wondering whether it was complete in terms of treatment exercises. For instance, on page 27 a case study early on, writes about a couple doing "the comfort exercise" and "the attraction exercise", but with no further information about this. I was left wondering whether they might be the "psychosexual skill exercises" mentioned in the next sentence (as coming from a different book by the same author) and whether that meant I had to buy a different book as well? They certainly did not seem to be in this book. Then on p62, there is mention of 4 psychosexual skill exercises - comfort, attraction, trust and scenario. Their implementation is according to the author "the core treatment strategy" for many couples, so I would expect them to be in the book. However only one exercise ("scenario") follows on p62. Then there is another psychosexual exercise on p56 which is described as "perhaps the most important psychosexual exercise". However this is a dialogue on touch preferences and therefore not one of the four core treatment strategy exercises as far as I can tell.Another shortcoming of having no index is that the research references (if applicable) are only given the first time a challenging sexual fact is written. Later on in the book the fact might be mentioned - in eg information to give to clients - but without an index it is impossible to find the fact when first written and its associated research reference. This matters because some of the facts are not what clients might expect and it would be good to give references to the more sceptical clients. Also some of the text, including a sexual style classification developed by the authors is quite technical and poorly explained, even flowing into do-at-home exercises without explanation, eg with clients supposed to write their own answers to questions including "do you prefer self-entrancement arousal or partner interaction arousal?" !I found some useful information in the book, but I was left lamenting on what might have been if the author had bothered with an index, so I could be sure that I had the complete exercises referred to as treatment strategies and sure I wasn't just being led into buying other books by the same author to get the full list of exercises. (Of the recommended reading in the appendix 7 out of the 9 books on couple sexuality and male sexuality are by the author).
