Q: I have heard this unit is really loud, can be heard in the next room. Is that true?

Next room, across the house, on another floor. Yup. It's loud. Like a vacuum constantly running. I actually catch myself sighing with relief when the timer shuts it down and it goes quiet. My ears get tired of listening to it, but it does a great job. PROTECT your countertop/table. Mine vibrated so much that the feet ruined my counter.

Anything from Excalibur is solid. I like the models with the stainless steel trays but they are twice the price. What other brands were you using? Excalibur dehydrators also have a warranty so if something does go wrong you are likely covered.

Q: Why is mine so noisy??

Mine is fairly noisy and we have to make sure it is not touching anything ie. shelf behind it or anything leaning against it because it has a little vibration that really carries.

Q: does the 3948 come with stainless steel trays?

It comes with the plastic trays and liners. I have had no issues with them. They clean up easily.
