Q: Does it need 2 magnets for each switch?

No, as the magnet passes the switch it makes then breaks. Beware, if using for detecting trains passing for signals etc , the switch can flick over a couple of times as the magnet traverses along its length. A better option would have been to fit the Reed at 90 deg to the approaching magnet 🧲.
