Q: does this include the upgrade kit?

This is the one I bought and it did come with the software to clone your hard drive so I see no reason that it will have changed. Similarly it comes with the rails and screws to install it. Its a great pack. Download and install software on the original PC with the drive plugged in through the USB adapter. Shut down, swap the new drive into the existing pc and reboot. It was that simple and really surprising. I expected a lot of messing about. It made a laptop that took hours to boot just come back to life again and work as good as new. Having a spare external drive once your done is a nice bonus too!

I bought a 2TB Kingston SSD as a data disc to replace my 1TB HDD, which was beginning to fail. Easy to do a direct replacement but you need to format it before it will function.

Q: How is reliability with this drive, particularly the 1024GB version. Anyone had these die on them? Any critical firmware updates needed when on Linux?

It's an SSD, so more reliable than conventional HDD, but high incidence continuous read/write functions on any SSD causes more longevity issues than equivalent operation on an HDD. That said, I use mine in a CCTV DVR and it has proven more reliable than OEM HDD's which were failing at the rate of 1 every 18 months. I have no experience with Linux so can't answer that part of your question.

Q: What is the sector size of these. I require 512k, not 4096k. Thanks

I think all drives are now 4k sector size or Advanced Format Drive as they are known, the manufacturers changed to that size in 2011. Is it an older motherboard that you've got ? Is it an older OS that your hoping to use, like Windows NT 3.5/1 ? 512 bytes is the sector size of the older drives
